Post subject:  CEL need info on a good scanner

I just had the CEL come on tonight and my mac $120 scanner cant pull it. Which scanner should I get that wont brake the bank but will still pull most codes? I would hate to have to go to the dealer every time a code pops up, thanks.

A lot of members have had luck with a basic scanner from HArbor Freight. I personally bought one at Wal-Mart for $100 that works great. One trick I found with it though is that you have to scan immediately after running the engine. Try putting the scanner in the truck, start it up, go down to the Stop 'n Go, then drive back home and as soon as you park it and turn it off plug the scanner in and turn the key over to "On." Mine will only read when the code is "fresh" like that.

Scanguage II is an excellent scantool, reads and clears KJ and TJ parameters and codes - gives some problems in the guage mode for the CRD, but the OBD2\CAN scantool functions offset that small glitch @ ~$170

Autoenginuity is a full-service pcware scantool, DCJ version does all the Chrysler heirarchy of vehicles, current back to '96 @ ~ $295

GMCTD, the AutoEnginuity only does the "full service" if you buy BOTH the basic scanner and the "enhanced" which is really just a second basic scanner that enables the software.
I'm selling my Autoenginuity Basic unit. It's unused, since I also bought the enhanced. $175 shipped and it's off to whoever wants it.

I've never had a problem pulling any code with it, it really is a professional piece of gear.

i have a $30 scanner from autozone. Pulls all of them. Works great. I will get the part number

Correct, I neglected to mention that as the website is clear on that distinction - standard '96-'02 OBD2 is the base setup, 2000^ CAN requires the "enhanced" setup, so the '05-'06 KJ CRD requires the enhanced adaptor and software

The 'zone reader is just that: a DTC reader\clearer - the others mentioned are full scantools

Well I tried the drive, shut off, back to on, and scan with not luck. Looks like a trip to the shop with good scanners or but a decent one for my self. Thanks for the help guys.
