Hard Starting Good Pressure

Okay, here is the problem. The jeep has started starting hard, 20-30 seconds, then it runs really rough for a few seconds, after that it runs fine, good acceleration, smooth, for a diesel etc. I have pumped the primer and the pressure is firm. I am throwing no cel. Time to change the filter, water in fuel?
Any suggestions.

Is the filter on tight? I have had one loosen on country roads and then act that way.Also any glow plug issues in the past? I know it seems funny, glowplugs in the summer,but they heat so fast that one being off can cause a "stagger" after start. If you think its fuel delivery related,park with the rear end higher then nose(a little incline),let it sit,if delivery issue this will give more pressure for easier fuel delivery.

hey, I am all for the lift pump, but it just seems funny that this happened overnight. I have never had any probs before, other than occasionally needing to pump the primer. anybody have a part number for the cummins intank pump?
I will check the filter, for tight, probably just swap it out, I think I am about due anyway.

You answered your own question.
Pump part number on my box 5143160AA.

Use the old ring, it will fit better. Use the original coat hanger arm and float and remove part of the locating tab so it will be located like the original and your guage will work like the original.

You'll need three pins but I don't have the numbers for them.

Another member mentioned recently that when he took off his filter, there were 2 O-rings on the threaded assembly. Apparently the last time he (or whomever) changed the fuel filter, they left an old O-Ring on and installed the new one on top of it. Did you do the filter last time? If it's due for a change, go ahead and do that first.

Well, I pulled the filter head, since it is easier to get to the filter, and swapped the filter out. I noticed the heater side is starting to leak, I haven't had the plug attached since I bought it, but so far it hadn't leaked, looks like a good excuse for a racor head and a cummins lift pump. As far as hard starting, I'll see in the morning. I think the leak is probably letting air into the system a lot faster than it used too. Thanks for your help everybody, I read the 28 pages on the lift pump today so I think I know what I want to do.
