Post subject:  POLL: Do you like your CRD tune?

With the recent rise of the Green Diesel tune, and the established InMotion tunes, I'd like some observations of everyone's performance. Before and after would be great, if you have any numbers, even better.

Basically, I am on the fence as to which one to choose, and I'm sure others are as well. Everyone has to balance the tune against their own driving needs, but for the people who already have one or both... What is different? Which do you like better?

I voted my Inmotion tune. Way more power than before and no downsides. Fuel mileage has not decreased. I still get 26mpg on my dailiy commute (2mi city + 7mi hwy) and can get 32 in conservative highway driving.

That said, I'll be sending my wife's CRD's ECU to Green Diesel, because they can turn off the CEL without EGR, and I want to see if mileage improves.

great power improvements... haven't seen an improvement in MPG cause i have only had it for about 2 weeks and the thrill hasn't wore off yet  that being said i saw 24 MPG mostly in town with much WOT and on a 60 MPH cruise the EVIC has said 36 but nothing to hand calculate on that yet... and my speedo is 100% accurate with my tom tom

contrary to some of the thoughts here i feel the power ant torque are very linear when under slight to moderate throttle.. and very torquey when in WOT

Sorry :?
Green Diesel
5 mpg increase. On both short trip city and highway driving

Very smooth operation under all condiotions

Actually it's all personal preference unless everyone has all choices

Not previously having the In Motion tune :(

B4 the GED tune - was at 26 mpg in moderate hiway driving over a 1000 mile drive, after the tune the next tank was at 33 - again at moderate hiway driving. Dropped down to the high 29's with agressive hiway driving (have about 1000 miles on the GED Tune). Based on hand calculated numbers. With a large improvement in transmission smoothness. Runs quieter, with a substantial performance gain. This rig was F37'd. For me, this is what my CRD needed.

Has anyone had issues directly after receiving one of these 'tunes'?

I've heard though other postings of people having failures (turbo, cooked wiring come to mind) soon after leaving stock configuration.

Any chance we could list those in one place?

I had to choose GDE, since that's all I know. I am thoroughly enjoying the extra power, responsiveness at low speed (I haven't wheeled with it yet but that is BOUND to help ** also for you hardcore wheelers, the GDE tune deactivates the default ECU tune to go to limp mode when both the accel and brake are pressed together**) and extra mpg. However, I have nothing to compare it to except just doing the ORM. Mine is a post- 11/2005 '06 MY CRD, so it has had F37 from the day it hit the dealer lot, and I bought it used last September.

Your and my 06 models left the factory with the newer converter. But the firmware flashes that changed the shift points didn't show up till June 06 and the offocial F37 was even later :? Mine was built in January 06 and initially had early shifts. It poped a coolant hose when it was two weeks old and they flashed the one or both computers then and the shift points were raised and power was less. That flash caused them to not communicate with third party scanners so they brought F31 for that and shortly after F37. Back then there was a new flash for something every week

I have Green Diesel. I have been driving it to work, but still can't give hard fuel numbers... as the tank is still over half full (at 285 miles on the trip odometer which is 10% off).

I am going to try and run it around tomorrow and get numbers for one full tank. Monday I get gears and taller springs in the rear, so that will add more variables into before and after fuel mileage comparisons.

Post subject:  Trail jammer?

I voted stock f37,but I have a trailjammer.............................guess no one else does..............H

I have a trailjammer right now too, and while I like the power it offers, I never really felt much difference in the mileage. I don't know, maybe I'm just remembering wrong since it has been so long since I drove the diesel. *sigh*

On that note, they ACTUALLY were ready to drive it out of the bay today to put some miles on it... And it wouldn't move.

Turns out - I had swapped the wheels a few weeks ago with my Grand Cherokee b/c the Liberty's 16 inch wheels (same as the GC) had the taller highway tires on them, and I wanted to try and help the mileage any way I could. Well, it seems the offset on the rims is different, and the GC rims were hitting the front calipers. Oops.

At least THIS problem isn't a mechanical failure!

None of the above. I'm running a chip and ORM. I guess this is not a poll for me to vote on.

I'm running IM stage 2, suncoast, lift pump, mufflerectomy and SEGR. Haven't tried the GDE tune so I can't compare the 2, but I'm am beyond pleased with my ride. The IM tune made it come alive, lift pump made the air in fuel problem go away, and SEGR kept me :)ing.

Now a couple observations.

1. Remember way back when we all did the ORM and got around a 3 MPG gain? Then remember after about 500 miles or so the MPG came back to normal? Well if I remember correctly, this was due to the ECM having to use default data due to the MAF being disconnected, however over the next 4-500 miles it adapted and the MPG gain evaporated with it. This is why a few who plugged their MAF's back in after a while saw the gain for a while again too. We need to see long term data on the GDE MPG claims.

2. I went through 3 factory TC's replaced, running only the SEGR, before I got my suncoast. Only after I got the suncoast did I go for the IM stage 2 tune. With the GDE's increased power, F37 or not I think we're getting ready to see another rash of stock TC failures.

3. The EGR will still fail as it is still active with the GDE, therefore it can and most likely will still fail not fully closed. It is a crappy part and not cheap.

4. Anbody trying to prove that their mod improved MPG usually sees an improvement due to driving carefully. I know I did when I did the air box mod. Also most of us are about as honest with our sex lives as our MPG claims.

Just providing a little food for thought.

Comments on your observations:

1) I remember that symptom well, which is why I put in an SEGR kit and didn't have that problem anymore. For all I know, the EGR input has 1/8" of soot on it. I hope to never find out as I don't plan on opening up the exhaust manifold any time soon. Perhaps a tap for a EGT sensor...

2)I'm thinking of a GDE tune and secretly hoping my TC dies so I can replace it with something better (or more corectly, so Chrysler can). Regardless any failure of a TC after a reasonable taxing by an engine that it's SUPPOSED to be able to handle is poor engineering anyway, so let them pay for it... if you're still in waranty, which I am.

3) It seems like the GDE tune and SEGR aren't mutually exclusive. GDE will be fooled by the SEGR just like the factory tune is. Based on folks test results, there doesn't seem to be any issues with having both.

Hi Dan,

Never said that the GDE and SEGR were exclusive, in fact every CRD, stock, IM or GDE should have one.

GDE however claims that with their tune the SEGR is not needed, which is only their opinion and should be taken as that, only an opinion. I was just providing an other view point that even with the GDE tune there are things like the SEGR, Suncoast and lift pump that make the CRD a much better vehicle. My comments were meant to provoke some thought, amd maybe that the GDE tune isn't the cure all and that maybe we should temper our expectations on their MPG claims until we see how they look after a month or 3.

The EGR is off all the time in normal driving conditions with the GDE tune, not sure where you heard otherwise. The EGR is opened for 0.5 seconds after getting off the pedal after an acceleration to balance the pressure in the compressor and turbine housing (aids turbo life). This condition does not effect fuel economy. The EGR fault codes P0401 (stuck closed) and P0402 (stuck open) are turned off and will never set a CEL. You will still get a CEL if the EGR is unplugged (open circuit).

We just activated a forum on our website, if you have any questions about the tune, it will be easier to address them there.

Thanks,

GDE

Remember that your tune is not going on new vehicles here in the states. They already have tired EGRs that are especially nasty if there is no segr or provent installed. Even with the half second open and shut there is no way you can claim it won't get stuck open and with the EGR codes disabled no way to tell but degraded performance."

Just replied to GDE. Don't get me wrong I wish GDE the best and if everything performs up to the claims I may get it too, but I am just going to wait and see at this point.

I can't comment on InMotion but stock my wife was running ~19mpg on her commute (heavy stop and go traffic). Now w/ the GDE tune she's running 26 on her last tank (w/ B99). Also she likes that I undid the ORM so her CEL went out.

Jury's still out on whether it's going to help transmission longevity. Jeep is F37'd and has had a Provent or EHM since ~2k miles.
