Posted this elsewhere and it was suggested I move it to this CRD section.

My 2006 Lib CRD wouldn't start last week. Happened to my brother after running errands for a couple hours. Turn key - no action, full dash lights etc. Towed to dealer and they found the starter fuse blown.

Track further and the mechanic found the main wire harness looked like it had overheated and was sticking together and first report was that wires might be melting together. After hours of tracking, the culprit was a broken wire at the alternator. But the mechanic reported the wire harness was heat damaged and he moved it away from the engine as best he could. I asked if the harness looked baked from external heat or from a wire that overheated inside the harness. He indicated he thought it was external heat.

Drove the 15 miles home and opened the hood and it did feel way hot, although I can't say it's any different than new. Stock liberty CRD except a recent INMOTION tune about a month ago. Any comments on this?

Love the ride but am now nervous about a solo romp in the desert.

Thanks for any suggestions or comments.

How many miles? Do you still have the plastic engine beauty cover on it, covering the wiring harness that is mounted directly across the top of the engine?

The heat in my CRD is laughable, but I've removed the plastic cover a long time ago. I haven't had any wiring problems, and I would say that the temperatures in my engine bay are probably in the low 100's, certainly nowhere near the heat that my v8 Grand Cherokee is pumping into the engine bay. That thing is STILL baking hot even hours after shutdown.

But then again, it is July in Savannah....

My liberty has 44000 miles on it. I'm the original owner. The plastic cover doesn't serve a purpose?

Heat? Hahahahaha. Come to Arizona where it's a nice 115* by the pool. Try pulling a 4500 Lb trailer at 70 MPH if you want to see the little Jeep heat up.... I'll show you hot.

The same purpose as heavy makeup on a cheap hooker.

where is the melted part located?... mine is slightly melted (the plastic wire bundler thing) by where the trans and the engine meet close to the EGR pipe

I believe the mechanic said it was generally in the bundle routed near the egr valve. He did not say how far down the bundle it went. The wires he moved seemed to be just pulled an inch or so away from the right side of the engine (facing it) and away fromt he egr stuff.

The starter is down there, maybe the bundle he talking about. Let see alt wire may run from the starter so cranking or alt load could get hot enough to cause the condition you talk about. Make sure all is in good working order, starter, battery and alt.

Thanks for the feedback.

And I'll see if the compartment cools down when I remove the "heavy makeup" <plastic engine cover>.
