They do not give 'em away; figure in the neighborhood of $95-$100

Remember your CRD takes 0w-40 synthetic @ $8.00/ qt at the dealer.
Then the filter and the normal labor. It adds up quick. Some dealers will let you bring in your own oil, many CRD owners are using 5w-40 synthetic from wally world and it seems to be working fine. It is listed as a acceptable substitute for the CRD engines

I just got back they only charged me 53.00. That seems really good. It only took them like an hour and a half. I asked them if it was synthetic and they said no. I was like what! And they had to go check and it was synthetic. They had no idea what the EGR problems were, and they said that they couldn't do anything with my crd till it flashes a code. It did have an ETR light on and he checked it and said it was because I touched the brake and gas at the same time. Well I'll have to wait till something breaks on mine to get any flashes done.

On mine, they show chrysler part number 5127394AA for the oil. I can't find it anywhere. Anyone have a way to look this number up?

I just have to pay for the filter but you should be able to get a good oil and filter yourself for under $30. Wix , NAPA and others make good filters that should be less than $6. I saw Rotellla 5w-40 for under $3 quart (3 x 21=21 plus 6 for a filter $27. Don't forget this is still cheap as you only change between 6k an 12k miles like you would with dyno oil. :?

I checked and the oil is pinkish/redish color. So I am sure it is a synthetic.

The paperwork said $84.50 for accounting purposes, but my invoice said $0.00. Part of the deal buying at my dealer.

Good deal, thanks. Same part numbers on mine. I've got free oil changes for 100K miles. I just wanted to make sure the right oil is going in!

Another filter to try is Fleetguard, available at Cummins dealers. A friend in Wyoming has an '04 Dodge Cummins Quad Cab, has always used Fleetguard filters on it. When i was out there in August, we pulled into a station to fuel up and he checked the oil. He showed me the dipstick, and the oil looked like he'd just changed it in the last few days. He told me that oil had been in the engine for over 4000 miles. From what i gathered, the Fleetguard filter for his Dodge ran around 6 or 7 bucks.

He also owns an '05 Sport CRD, and that's one thing he's complained about - while the oil in the Cummins will stay clean for 4000 miles, with the CRD you drive around the block and the stuff turns black, as he put it.

I went to the Wix website, found the number for their oil filter for the CRD, then went to the Fleetguard website, and the Wix number cross-referenced to a Fleetguard filter. The Fleetguard P/N is LF3339.

I don't know about the Wix filter. Besides fitting the CRD, it's also listed as fitting Ford/Mercury gas cars made from '81 thru '04. In other words, this just might be a generic gas car filter they've already been making for 20 years, that just happened to be the right size and thread pattern to fit the CRD. Filtration was listed as 20 microns, nothing outstanding there.

I'm going back to the Fleetguard website and try crossing the Mopar filter number and see what happens.

I've had my CRD for a short while... time for the first oil change. I was going to use Mobil 1 0W-40. As this is my first diesel, is there special "diesel-rated" oil, or do you just use the same stuff as for non-diesel engines? Is Mobil 1 any different from the Rotella you guys recommend?

Kevin,

Definitely go w/ a diesel oil. Shell Rotella synth or Mobil1 (commerically it's called Delvac, at Kragen or Wal-Mart it'll just be called Mobile 1 truck and SUV) 5W-40 are both excellent oils. Also, Amsoil Series 3000 5W-30. Look for them in Gallon jugs - much cheaper that way.

Oil filters are still being hotly debated here. I'm planning to us an Amsoil filter for my first change (assuming it's a different filter from the Gas Libby) but most people are sticking w/ the Mopar one for now. Searrcha round the board - there's a thread about "Wix" that has some good discussion on filters.

that p/n shows up on my recite as oil 0W40 1081090, That has to be the mobile 1 because I don't think that 0W40 is used in other applications.
