What mods are you all doing to increase the fuel mileage on your CRDs ?

What are your results ?

Well I bought my truck with a Suncoast, Transco and Inmotion already installed (Thanks Chad  ) Along with the EGR unplugged and a Provent (Thanks Chad #2) mostly proper driving technique is the key. If you want high MPG's you have to drive it like a baby. Take as long as possible to get to highway speed. Dont tailgate so you dont have to constantly drop out of cruise. Drive 55-60 MPH ONLY! Diesel's are very speed/RPM sensitive. I folded in my mirrors and took off my antenna (I had XM) and drove as stated above to get 38-40 MPG on my trip home.

I have a 2001 TDI Jetta that regularly gets me 60+ MPG while driving as explained above.

GDE's tune increased my highway mileage better then 4 mpg from about 25 to around 29 and that's with stock tires and per the odometer that's supposably 10% low so you could tack on another 2 or so mpg's to that
Exact comparasions are difficult as my use of the AC for the GDE tuned trip  I've not used enough to get a figure on city driving yet but the guage is sure moving slow

Not to mention a totally different driving experience 8)

I drive @ 62mph,have a edge trailjammer set to #2 setting,no kitty, straight piped, segr, and light foot, also run tires @40psi.I also was a trucker for years so I always ask(via CB) if I can catch a ride behind a wheeler on the highway.I can get up to 40 mpg behind a friendly trucker(stay between 60-100 feet back, far enough for comfort but still in the "bubble"),and I also have a WVO system on my CRD that helps with the fuel bills...................H

The modification I've found that made the biggest difference was the GDE reflash. This added at least 3 mpg to my mileage (23 to 26), and made the vehicle peppier and more driveable. The other modifications I've done (Samco hoses, 2002 airbox, Provent, Lift pump, different muffler) made the vehicle more reliable and driveable, but did not affect mileage.

Jeep is doing great, alot better then my wallet.Alot cheaper than a new engine, but they don't give those turbos away. The extra power is incredible(I thought it had alot before, but I didn't know it had a bad turbo),as well as the piece of mind that (knock on wood) I will be allset for about 100K,as far as planned repairs.Luckily turbo was purchased after chrysler went belly up so I HAVE a warrenty.Word to the wise,if doing head gasket or timing belt, make sure those rockers are torqued to spec,as my mechanic bought two from his error :) .Getting better MPG since new turbo, and ALOT more grins per-mile.............H

What kind of signs did you get that the turbo was going? Or were there any signs?

Joe,

You're a magician. The best mileage I got out of the CRD was 30.2mpg.

Most of the time I averaged about 28 on the highway and 20-21 around town.

The interesting thing is that my Grand Cherokee CRD is getting the same around town, but only getting about 24-25 on the highway. Not a big difference. Of course, that's with me running between 70 and 80mph and passing people like they are standing still. :)

I love to work my diesels. :)

Michelin XPS Rib summer tires pumped to 65 psi. Rides like a brick now but you can feel the lower drag especially below 45 mph (less aero effect).

Really surprised that as a trucker for years, you would even chose to follow a semi. I would rather you didn't follow mine. I would rather not have the memory of how you might have been distracted when I had to put my brake to the floor and you then ate my rear. Bad things happen to small vehicles when they plow into 53' of trailer with 45,000 lb if freight in them. Heck, something simple like a tire blowing on my trailer could easily send the cap into your frontend and you may not be able to manuever out of the way or stop if you have other vehicles around you. Guess I am just over sensitive to this following stuff. Guess I've seen too much in almost 30 years at the game. Seen whole wheels come off of trucks and take out 4 wheelers. Seen what happens when a vehicle slams into a truck at 70 mph. Watched as a tire cap took off the top of a sports car. Even saw a whole rear axle come off and take out a pickup. And these were just the following events. Besides, you never know for sure how experienced that trucker in front of you is. Talk is cheap on a CB. You should know that.

But let's see if it's worth it... 40 mpg @ 2.60 a gallon.... my life isn't worth risking a chance to be able to reduce my cost of operation to a tad over 6.5 cents a mile. I'll settle for my highway average of around 30 mpg and 8.7 cents a mile in fuel cost. 2 cents doesn't seem worth risking my neck, my wife's, or my CRD Liberty that I can't replace with a new one. I am comforted in the fact that I am getting 3 mpg over what the EPA sticker said I would get on the highway. But then, every 50 or 60 miles, you will be able to save for a cup of coffee! There is a bright side!

Look.. to be honest... you may be able to deal with such situations. But you have to remember that those you are posting to may not have the experience to make a snap decision if they run into a problem behind a semi. After all.... the results are in.... over 80% of truck/auto accidents are the fault of the auto driver. There hasn't been a lot of emphasis in driver's ed classes put on the hazards of driving around big trucks. More's the pity.

I agree with the accident issue, but I only tuck behind truck after asking,I guess I got to used to tail drafting driving OTR over the years. You are correct it isn't for everyone and distraction are hazardous. So I think this best as aopen road/ flat ground experiment.

It doesn't matter whether or not you ask... a truck driver cannot control when his tire is going to explode or when he may have to slam on the breaks, either of which could easily total your Jeep or take your life.

NOT worth the risk. EVER.

Bone stock, 26k miles, 20.22 MPG in mixed driving. I just bought this Jeep, my first Liberty but 5th Jeep, and I'm already burning money in my head. I'd hoped for better mileage and I'm looking into this.

Howdy roc - Welcome to LOST

totally stock includes some designed in problems - you need to clean the MAP sensor and get something to keep the oil out of the intake - either Provent or EHM.

check out the Tech section

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=22630

and the generic haystack
http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=30576

and as noted in some of the other mileage threads -the diesel is rpm sensitive, the 1800 - 2000 rpm range tends to be good

A little off topic…
My heart goes out to you truckers out there. I have rode shot-gun and seen first hand how NOBODY gives you guys a break.

And for those of you that think you can out-stop a semi, think again. Fact is that even the newer Corvette’s can’t stop as fast as most semi’s.

Give them a break and stay way away.

Where did this little nugget of wisdom come from?

I do feel for truckers who get abused by 4 wheelers.
