Any CRD owners replaced their A/C compressor? I'm getting tired of no air. How long did it take and what did you remove?

...so, I'm not the only one. Mine is due. I have the new one. I'm going to pay to have that one done. If it was a matter of recharging/refilling the system, I might be tempted. I'm not confident in bringing a system up from scratch.

One thing my mechanic did recommend was replacing the drier as well. The seals are bad in my compressor. He said it is generally a good idea to replace the drier since loose parts could have gather in it. It would be a shame to install that new compressor only to have foreign particles contained in it to take out the new compressor. The drier was about $60. For whatever reason, the CRD's version differs from the gasser version in some way...they're different part numbers at least and the cost differential is only a few dollars.

Yep always replace the receiver/dryer and the orifice tube when you install a new compressor,a must to retain any warranty on the new compressor.Make sure you have a shop with proper equipment recover any remaining R134A in the system and pull a vacuum before opening the system,it is illegal to purposely expelling R134A into the air. After part replacement go back to the shop and have them pull a vacuum again and properly recharge with the correct amount of R134A and PAG oil.

I hadn't really considered the possibility of just installing the pump myself and then just having them recharge it. Mine is completely empty...so what ever used to be in there is long gone by now. That would save some cash on labor.

Before replacing the compressor you should check that it's the source of the leak. Don't "assume". I was faced with a leak on my recently purchased 00 Cherokee. First do a visual on the system. If you see traces of oil around joints or on the condensor coil that's your problem. However in my and many other cases there's no visable sign. In that case you put in enough freon to cause the compressor to operate then using a "sniffer" probe all around . You might find as I did that when the sniffer is put near the dash vent that it will go off. That means you need a evaporator coil :? On a Cherokee and I suppose Liberties also you first remove the dash to gain axcess to the heater box where the evaporator hides. It too must be removed. I spent the better part of two days replacing the evaporator and heater core while I was in there. Cherokee's have a history of bad evaporators and I hope KJ's are not going down the same path.

tjkj2002 didn't specifically mention it but add the proper amount of refrigerant oil directly into each part replaced. Almost anyone can add freon and make the systen cycle but as he mentions it takes equiptment, training and experience to make it cool properly :D

The CRD version drier is just like the one used on my XJ. The one carried by most parts stores does not directly fit on the XJ. On my XJ and KJ both ports on the dryer point upward. The common replacement has the one pointing up replaced by a pipe going directly to the evaporator (replacing one of the lines) and the other pointing foward. The one pointing foward did not work on my XJ

I now have a COOL XJ
