Getting ready for an emissions test, plugged in the maf and cleared the codes.

Kept getting a P1140 no matter what I did.

Online this shows a water in fuel code - Its not.

The service manual shows a vacum soleniod circuit short - Its not.

the p1140 is completely related to the FCV, mine wasn't plugged in fully - turns out my old man got tired of the noise it made and unplugged it. Plugging it back in cleared the light but made the FCv function again(with the grinding noises it makes).

So for the record - P1140 = FCV problem.

I wonder how many "old man $$$$" problems I have caused. I riged up a few things in my old VW camper my son, who is a better mechanic than I, is still sorting out.

Great you could figure this out. Now will a grinding FCV effect your smog test?

If no codes then will'nt running pure bio pretty much pass any smog test?

LOL, for the record, the forum censors "g o d" as $$$$. I guess saying god is no longer politically correct.

The FCV shouldn't cause any problems for me now that the check engine light is off. No reason any BIO will make it impossible to pass.

I've yet to hear of a diesel "SMOG TEST" in the US that is anything more than an opacity test, so unless your vehicle smokes like a train it will pass, regardless of fuel. Just make g o d - d a m sure the CEL isn't on ;)

Yup hence my problem, I won't have any trouble passing the opacity test, but the CEL test would have murdered me. I was at the point of thinking about pulling the bulb and hoping I got by with an OBDII check for codes.

Technically they are supposed to check and make sure it comes on when the ignition comes on, then shuts back off, hence removing the bulb may not cut it.

Legend has it that the bulb is not removable. It is attached directly to the circuit board. I'm thinking maybe it's an LED lamp, but that part may be strictly a figment of my imagination. :?

Yes, they are usually LEDs so that they dont burn out in the lifetime of the vehicle.

Further to the "old man $$$$" problems, check out this site for a general description of the types fixes I have made to various mechanical things:
