Post subject:  Stoutdog's GDE Experience, and more!

Alright, so I finally got around to having my ECU tuned by the folks at GDE.

First impressions: Like everyone else, WOW! There is a lot more power under the hood now. Once I adjust my driving style for this new found torque/hp, I might stop roaring up hills around town 8) .

I ran my CRD about 40 miles on the highway, just to get a feel for how she drives now. Conditions were nasty - wind and rain, the whole way. Nevertheless, EVIC showed 37.2mpg when I got off and was still climbing about .1 mpg every mile or so. I know it isn't an accurate read, but that number is fully 6 mpg higher than what the EVIC read on my best tank pre-GDE (that tank hand calculated to 27.8., my EVIC is terrible....)

Now for the fun part. I plan to drive from FL to AZ in a little over two weeks, that's about 2,000 miles. Between now and then, I will be doing a number of things to optimize my Jeep's fuel economy. As I go along, I will update this with what I have done.

Pre-8/1: Bone stock 2006 Limited KJ CRD. Does have the full Mopar skids, which may help mpg slightly.
8/1: GDE Tune, unplugged fuel heater, Amsoil EA 201 Filter, Filterminder

------------------
EDIT 8/4:
Removed and cleaned the MAP today. It was so encrusted that I couldn't even see the frame around the sensor. That couldn't be good . It's nice and shiny now though!

I also disconnected both CAC(intercooler) hoses and cleaned them out thoroughly. The one running from the intercooler back into the engine block was pretty much clean. The one running from the MAP to the intercooler though? YIKES! It was entirely covered in black sooty oil. Both are now almost good as new. Fortunately they weren't too soggy, so no need to replace them at the moment.

------------------
EDIT 8/7
My Magnaflow #12226 showed up today. I got it from magnaflowperformanceexhausts dot com for just $58 with free shipping. They were a little slow, but you can't beat the price. I've also found a shop that will do the hack/weld job for $35-40. I like mods that come in under $100 8) .

Looks like I'm averaging about 28mpg in town so far. Where I currently am (not Tempe) is hilly as all get out and 35 mph everywhere. Combined with my short commute (5-6 miles), 28 wouldn't be half bad!

------------------
Edit 8/13
Got the Magnaflow installed today for just $40, not a bad deal. Even with the GDE tune, there is a noticeable difference in drivability. I can climb hills, maintaining speed, at about 100 less RPMs than before, which should translate to better mileage.

GDE + removing engine break = GOBS of coasting ability    I've got so much now that I can coast around 1100RPMs at 35mph and not slow down! It's fantastic!

This concludes my pre-trip mods (with the exception of a radio fix on Saturday :)).

Remaining in consideration:

1) Running B25-30 once I get back home, with a fuel filter change after 2-3 tanks. I will do this and the cleaner engine should improve performance slightly
2) Lift pump? Not sure yet, debating with myself....
3) CCV filter of some sort, dependent upon how gross my hoses and MAP sensor are at the next 2 oil changes.

I should have some numbers next week!

------------------
Edit 8/14
First tank mileage: 25.4 hand calculated & adjusted for odo error.

Not bad, considering this was 80% in town (35-45mph). I installed GDE with ~6 gallons of fuel already burned, given an in-town estimate of 19-20 mpg based on prior experience (117 miles total, pre-GDE). This tank of fuel was B5, from a very sketchy place in the backwoods of Florida, which maybe wasn't the best idea .

Also, it is important to note that I left my Jeep at my parent's house while I was fulfilling a 10-week internship assignment. The GDE tune was installed post-internship, on an old tank of sketchy biofuel :? That's a recipe for some high #s right there y'all

In short, I drove an additional 340 miles on ~12 gallons of fuel post-GDE, same driving conditions. Giving me a GDE in-town average of ~28mpg, an 8mpg improvement over stock! WOOHOO!!! I can't wait to see what this puppy does on my trip next week!

-----------------
Edit 8/22
Results:

#1 - 35.3mpg, 60mph, no AC (just seeing what I could do)
#2 - 29.5mpg, 70mph, AC, lots of traffic
#3 - 29.7mpg, 70mph, AC, uphill & into a storm
#4 - 33.8mpg, 60mph, AC

Definitely an improvement over stock, although I get the feeling that GDE really shines in town more so than on the highway.

Kinda changes things going from stock to a tune doesn't it.
Looking forward to the trip results . Enjoy

Looking fwd. to seeing some of your fuel economy numbers in the coming weeks.

Just noticed the fuelly link in your signature. I'll have to give that a try.

Is the mileage shown on that cumulative, last tank or what?

Its an average of all the tanks you have logged on the site, and is automagicly updated when you add a fill up. If you click on the image, it will take you to a more detailed page where you can see individual fuel ups and averages etc.

I think you need to have 2 fill ups before it gives you the option of putting an image on sig lines

I'm guessing you do a bunch of highway driving, eh? 35.0 might be a little high, even for GDE, if you were in town....

Nothing too exciting today. She was sitting in my side yard for 10 weeks while I was in DC, so I'm just going to give her a good bath and scrubbing. Considering how much crud is on her at the moment, mileage may actually improve

I got a check engine light earlier, no clue what the code is. I would think it was GDE related, except I got the code immediately after getting new keys. The previous owner only gave us one remote key, so I just had two additional keys made (one for cool down, one for hide-away). I tested both quickly and then switched back to the regular key, at which point I got a CEL. Hopefully it will go away soon :?

We also got keys made for the roof rack (the genius before me lost those keys...). Taking that off might help a little, even if it is just the rails.

We looked up the VIN and found out that the previous owner REMOVED the Nav/Radio and replaced it with a basic Pioneer. No big deal as I already have a GPS. The only thing not working is the 6-CD changer in the trunk... GRRRRRR

I do almost all hwy driving 110 miles per day give or take. With a small amount of city type driving at each end.

my avg mpg will take a dive in a day or two. Took a trip this weekend. 75+ mph and more than a few stop signs, lights, wrong turns etc.
I'll be lucky to get 32-33 out of this tank. Then of coarse the winter diesel blend will be coming in a few months and that should all but eliminate any chance of a 35mpg overall average.

Well, the CEL went away. 8)

Maybe the ECU got a little angry at the use of multiple keys in a one minute period. Who knows. At least it's not a worry now! :D

I gave my CRD a good bath today, she was in dire need. Got bigger plans for tomorrow though.

I also reset my EVIC mpg estimator when I was driving around town tonight. After about 10 miles of late-night in town driving, it showed 36.1. That is around 12mpg better than I have EVER seen in similar driving situations on a fresh EVIC!!! 8)

The fuelly site is pretty cool. I had been using mycarprojects.net to track my mileage but this one has a more 'cool' factor.

Hmmm, Samcos, $300 at http://www.boostcontroller.com/index.php?category=99 . . . .

The "Urban Camo" looks just plain stupid, IMO. I went with the blue and a set of Samco hose clamps. They had them to me in 3 days.

I would, if I felt the need. Like I said, one hose was basically clean and the other cleaned up pretty well.

I must add that my CRD only has 26k on it, so I probably could've made another 20k on dirty hoses before they weakened enough. With the GDE tune removing the need to worry about soot, and the oil being a general non-issue by itself, I can't justify dropping $300 on a pair of hoses unless the ones I currently have are useless.

30 minutes and a little elbow grease did wonders :D

So you're not up for wearing a hoodie and gettin down wit' the kidz then  I have the blue ones myself - I don't think I could fit the Urban Camo pipes and keep a straight face - plus the sheer embarrassment factor when the Kj goes in for a service

Exactly right. Although they are more about function than form, at least with the blue, they say, "I know something about what's going on under here." The urban camos just say "I am a dooshbag - did you notice my popped collar?"

No offense if anyone out there in L.O.S.T.-land wears a popped collar. . .

*Edited because "dooshbag" came out "dink" when I spelled it correctly.*

Post subject:  Consider a Fuel Cooler

There is a temp sensor in the fuel system that cuts back the power when the fuel temp gets around 163f. As the temp goes up, it cuts the power even more to save the fuel system. Fuel cooler keeps the fuel temp down and lets your tune and other mods perform as designed.
GMCTD and myself picked out the same Trans cooler turned into a fuel cooler and it works great.
The easiest way to put it in is on the return line going back to the tank.
I hung the cooler to the left of the radiator.
Image
Another detail to deal with is to redo the flange on the back of the cat that will choke the flow going through your new Magnaflow.
Check out my link.

I've never seen my temps jump above stock levels (one tick below half). Is a fuel cooler really necessary in a Jeep that is used primarily as a DD and light off-road vehicle?

I may tow lightly eventually, but not for 3-4 years at least.
