How would synthetic motor oil differ from diesel synthetic motor oil? Additives? all the synthetics I've come across with "Diesel" on them have been too heavy i.e. 15W-40.

Mobil 1 makes their Turbo Diesel Truck oil, which is a 5W-40, and Shell makes Rotella in 5W-40. Either would be fine, but I use the Rotella because it's a little cheaper. Both are available at Wal-Mart.

we just got the Rotella 5W-40 at Autozone here, and there is the "Autozone Rewards Card" so you can earn $20 for every 5>$20 purchases. Here its reatailing cheaper by the Gallon then 4qts of Mobil1

I changed the oil b4 i even got the analysis back(interesting to note, the analysis said no changed needed, resample at next interval), i wasn not happy w/ the Amsoil as i added several quarts of oil over the 12K of operation (burning it i guess?). I do a lot of off roading and the dust is pretty severe in some cases. Tho from the looks of other peoples samples, i couldnt tell if the SI was all that out of wack really, nor the alluminum.

On that sample i would have been running the stock paper air filter. Ive since switched to a combo of filters, K&N for the street, AMSOIL air filter for the dusty trail. We shall see how that works out...

Im now running ELF 5w40 505.1

Oil filters used on this sample: EA015 and EABP90 (w/ BMK13 bypass kit)

Insolubles measured in % vs ppm is confusing too.... by my thinking...
0.3% would be 30,000ppm?

Considering where he drives it I am pleased to know the silicon is as low as it is.

Valvoline also makes a 5W-40 synthetic turbo diesel oil. I tried it once, got it at Napa, but it was a tad more expensive than the Rotella at Walmart, so I switched back. I think it is Blue-Max or some such.

I was wondering on that. I just assumed the 4 meant a small metric number. 4 qts in 12,000 miles? That's not good. You basically changed the oil. Sample looks worse now. Hope it's the oil.

Just a note, adding the BMK13 bypass filter kit boosts the CRD sump capacity to about 8quarts. Either way, ya it kept sucking oil down or belching it out er somthing through the CCV.... (Current working theory is that it was sucked it in through the turbo berring, when gasping for air when the turbo was in full action) Anyhows, Ive not burned a drop of the ELF as of yet, at about 2~3K miles on the new oil. Not sure what the deal there was... i hope it doesnt continue...

Those are really nice wear numbers for a 7k mile interval, based on the others I've seen. Strange that the viscosity got so high! It's SAE 50 now.

Could you double check that viscosity number? It should be about 55 SUS at 100C!

Edit: nevermind, I get it now. It's cSt, not SUS.

Shell Rotella T 5W/40 (Syn)
VM Motori 2.8L Turbo CRD
5500 Miles on oil

We found nothing unusual in this initial sample from this engine. Universal averages show typical wear
from the 2.8L VM Motori turbo after about 5200 miles oil use. Your oil was run longer than that and wear read
generally better than average. We found a minor amount of fuel, which is probably from idling or city driving. We
generally don't consider fuel a problem unless it is above 2.0%, so this isn't anything to worry about. No anti-freeze was
found. Air and oil filtration (see silicon/insolubles) are good. This engine is doing quite well at 34,000 total miles.

Anyone using Esso Ultron 5W-40?

It's approved for ACEA B4 which fits the Cherokee - just curious as this is my oil of choice both for price and specs.

PS: Esso is owned by Exxon which is part of Mobil too ;)

I just picked up 3 gallons of Shell(?) Rotella Synthetic (for diesels) at Wal Mart - for the Cummins (Suburban). It's 5W-40... goes for $16-ish/gallon there.

Don't think it is avaliable here in the U.S. Not many diesel 5w/40 oils to choose from here. Of course not many diesel vehicles to choose from either!

Just got my 34,000 oil report back. I think the VM engine has just hit its stride. The report starts "Wow, engines as steady as yours don't show up very often." and goes on to say that wear metals are exactly the same as in the last sample with the exception of improved bearing wear. Additional remarks are made about the low level of silicon, which, as noted before, I attribute to the Amsoil eaa filter. At 29K the silicon level was 8. At 34K, after 2 rounds of being air-hosed out, the silicon level is at 9. Blackstone says the average silicon level is 13. The report concludes that I "must drive with a gentle foot," when in fact the opposite is true. I careful with maintenance but I drive the crap out of it. :D

Here is what Blackstone said about my 39K sample

No problems were found in the latest sample from your 2.8L. Fuel was again found at 0.5% but
this level is hardly a problem and no other harmful contaminants were found. You could easily get this
much fuel in your oil from daily city driving. Wear looks good at 38,897 miles. Aluminum increased a bit but
isn't high enough to call a problem. It read much lower than we had expected to find last time. Check back
in another 4,500 miles. Looks like you've got a nicely wearing engine on your hands.

see

http://picasaweb.google.com/bill.barg/O ... 8961070418

Note that this second analysis was using the SEGR through most of it. The Provent was not until the last 1000 miles
