Post subject:  Drive the 05 CRD or get a new vehicle
I am starting a new job (outside sales) that will require me to get my own vehicle. Currenlty it is provided so i will need to get a new vehicle to replace the provided one. My wife now drive the 05 CRD. So i have thought about me driving the CRD and just getting something new for her. They new job will pay milage so i think the CRD would make a good choice, anything new i have been looking at dosent seem to get as good as the jeep.

Any ideas or recomendations? The jeep only has 23,000 miles on it we got it new and i was planning on the GDE flash and suncost TC setup if im gonna drive it everyday.

Along with economy you've got to think about comfort & room to haul a few customers yes? Most of the sales guys that come see us are in big 4 door cars with cushy seats.

I drove a 3 hour drive, stood for about 7 hours, and drove back home on saturday, and my legs felt like they'd been ran over by the time I got home. I'm not sure if I'd want to drive my Liberty more than a couple hours a day, every day. I guess it depends how long you'll be in the car.

One thing to note is I have large, short legs, and the front of the seat was bugging my thighs pretty badly by the end of the day.

If you're comfortable in your Jeep for long periods of time, go for it. Otherwise find something roomy and ultra comfy. Don't forget the adult sized backseat if you're going to be entertaining. I wouldn't want to ask adults to get in the back of my liberty.

Before I can give my highly sought after opinion :roll: I've got a couple questions.


What kind of driving do you expect to do for your job. If its a lot of stop and go city, or any kind of driving where you would be stopping and accelerating constantly, I would not use the CRD for that, if fuel economy was your main goal.

How much time do you plan on spending in the vehicle, and/or will you be driving clients around. The Lib is not known for its comfort, so you may want to look into another machine if this is the case.

Never have spent more than 45min or so in the Liberty, so that is a very good point. I guess i will be driving at least 500 miles per week. Should not be much driving clients around and the ones i do can suck it up :lol: .
The driving will be mostly highway and secondary roads, not much city or stop and go driving. I currenlty have a Camrey Hybrid and getting around 38mpg.

I sold my jetta tdi when i got the first job with company car, and have thought about getting a new jetta, but it may be just a bit to small.

Maybe i will take the Liberty out for a full day and see how it does.

If you are being paid for mileage, I would certainly consider a Jetta TDI for the highest $ return. But then again, it all depends on what kind of driving you are doing. Jettas aren't too good off of paved surfaces.

The obvious answer since you have to buy a vehicle, is buy another CRD, and run up the miles on that.

Leaving your relatively low mileage CRD at home with the wife.

Everyone needs at least one crd.

Last year I drove the Jeep 14 hours each way to/from NH & Michigan without leg cramps or arse flatening. I have also taken many trips in the 6-8 hour range without issue (am writing this in DC which is 8 hrs from NH) and do not find the Jeep to be uncomfortable. Yes, there are more comfotable cars with better seats, but the Jeep seems more than adequate to me.

x2 on what Vtdog said. I take long trips in my CRD without any problems other than the same road fatigue that happens whether I'm in a Mercury Mariner hybrid, my old 01 Jetta TDI or my previous cars before that. The only one that was immune from this was my 83 Lincoln Town Car. Because it was a Lincoln.

I use my CRD as a truckstop hotel, the seats are comfortable enough for me, but this is a personal decision between you and your keister. But you won't be unhappy with the GDE and the nice mileage bump. No matter what, getting a new car is ALWAYS more expensive than working with the one you have already.

There are too many job losses for me to think it is going to be easy for you in sales.
We are moving to AZ from Maine and I have been trying to sell "stuff."
To sell goats I had to advertise a lot and say they had big balls, go figure.

As far as comfort goes, I have the Big Boy brackets, moves the seat back, very comfortable. 500 miles/week no problem.

You need a vehicle for the old lady, especially if you have kids, otherwise hold off, pay cash

I think it makes the most sence to just drive the Liberty. It is paid for and will get as good as milage as any car i would get that is bid enough to hold all my crap i need for work.

I just put on some big digger Goodyears this past winter (wife only drive 3 miles to work). I may have to pick up a set a summer rims with some eco type tires.

Now to figure out what to get for the wife to drive and we have just added to the family and she would like somthing with some room.

That's kind of what I was thinking...Towncar/Grand marquis...that sort of size. Big ol overstuffed bench where you can actually move your feet into different locations.
