Post subject:  Timing Belt and Coolant change
I'm shopping around for the best price on a timing belt/pulleys/water pump change, and three local stealers have told me that the timing belt is on back order with no availability date listed. Cannot find it available on the mopar parts internet sites either. Has anybody else encountered this?

Also want to change my coolant and thermostat. Is there a "how to" write-up available, and does anybody know the part number for the thermostat?

2.8L DIESEL ENGINE
NOTE: The thermostat is not serviced separately.
The thermostat and housing must be replaced as
an assembly.
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Remove engine cover (Refer to 9 - ENGINE
COVER - REMOVAL).
3. Partially drain cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING/
ENGINE/COOLANT - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
4. Disconnect upper radiator hose and bypass hoses
at thermostat housing (2).
5. Remove thermostat housing retaining bolts, support
bracket (2.8L) and housing from cylinder head, discard
gasket.

2.8L DIESEL ENGINE
1. Clean old gasket material from cylinder head and thermostat housing.
2. Install thermostat housing with gasket and support bracket (2.8 L) to cylinder head. Torque bolts to 27 N·m.
3. Connect coolant bypass hose and upper radiator hose to thermostat housing.
4. Refill cooling system (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ENGINE/COOLANT - STANDARD PROCEDURE).
5. Install engine cover (Refer to 9 - ENGINE COVER - INSTALLATION).
6. Connect negative battery cable.

RJM, thanks for the responses. I called moparonlineparts.com and got the same response - the timing belt is on back order with no indication of availability. So how are we supposed to maintain these vehicles if we cannot get the parts, or an indication of when the parts will be available? I'll send that question to the Jeep website.

I know the timing belts may be available at the aftermarket suppliers. However, the waranty on mopar parts installed by a stealer includes labor. The aftermarket parts warranty does not cover labor. I use aftermarket parts, but I want parts and labor covered for a high cost maintenance item like this timing belt.

This makes no sense to me. If the TB is supposed to be serviced at 100k miles, there can't be that many Libby CRDs getting serviced to put the part on back order.

I have an odd suspicion that its going to be a PITA to get motor parts in a few years.

relax :x seems about 75% of the parts we need at the shop are on backorder.
seems chrysler has a bit of a problem since the chapter 11 and they burned many suppliers

im ordering my idlers & tensioer tomorrow there still avalible.

YES!! Unless you do your work. Then it's optional. I do my own and I will be changing mine at the same time as the timing belt.

I just got a quote from the dealer, $560 just in labor and that does not include replacing the water pump.

I left mine on and so far so good. Waterpump is around $500 here...(part only)

So I only did the belt and tensioner etc.

$78 for the first case? Thats a good deal IIRC. I got all four cases complete except for one minor tool for $600 or so. If anyone is in the Lynchburg area, they are available for use, but won't be leaving my presence. Happy to help out a CRD owner, but the tools are harder to find than an honest politician.

I just got my timing belt done today. I did the belt, idlers, tensioner and water pump. I used an indy mechanic for the job. Total for labor was 664.00 parts were 612.00. I also bought case 1 of 4 of the special tools required for 78.00. So if you are in the Ventura, CA area there is a great shop around here to do the TB job.
