Several people who have taken off their mufflers have commented on the large quantity of soot in the muffler, even on an engine with relatively low mileage. This makes me wonder what the inside of the converter looks like, too. I don't think the cat deals well with particulate carbon, and it seems to me that the honeycomb or pellet maze would easily get clogged up with soot even faster than the muffler would. Anybody happen to check that out when they replaced their mufflers?

I had an aeroturbine muffler installed this past weekend - I had my camera phone ready to take pictures once they got the oem muffler off. While the shop was cutting the old muffler out, a Ford PSD owner having his brakes worked on started asking me questions about Liberty diesel jeeps - he had a V6 Liberty and didn't know about the CRD. By the time I had turned back to the CRD, the tech had the Aero installed and was welding it in - alas no pictures.

I did get a good look at the muffler though, and it was black inside, but no execessive soot. I would think a good run through a mountain highway or Interstate would raise the temps enough to burn out the soot. Who knows, Jeep may have implemented a burn cycle in the ECM code - adding a small pulse of fuel on the exhaust stroke - periodically to clean burn the CAT. It would be nice to have some pictures though.

The newer particulate filters will have this feature, have to think Bosch already has the code available. The ability to add another small injection during different phases of the crankshaft cycle is why common rail technology is displacing the unit injectors in TDI's. I wonder how long Ford will be able to keep their HEUI system if it can't handle multiphase injection.
