rattles like an refrigerator ...

Should I be concerned about the engine rattling like an old refrigerator, 1500 rpm, when you slow down and are almost stopped. It sounds fine when under load and moving.

Have you changed the alternator decoupler pulley yet?

Hi, not sure if it is the same but my dealer has been helping me in finding the cause of a rattle in mine (the drive train appears to be grounding under similar circumstances). We are pretty sure it is the driver's side engine mount which has been ordered and will be replaced. I will post about it as soon as I have had it done.

Thanks for the responses! Neither issue seems life threatening. We are on an extended trip and the nearest dealer is at least 70 miles away. May deal with it when w get back. Hard part is getting a dealer to diagnose and fix, coming in with knowledge helps alot.

X2. That's what mine sounded like when it started failing. It's pretty easy to tell if that's the issue. With the hood open, you can hear noticeably that the sound is coming from near the general area of the serpentine belt. It's loud under there, but still pretty apparent. You can also spray a little lubricant on the hub of the tensioner pulleys one at a time and see if that helps. When the alternator pulley goes out, it often takes one or more of the inexpensive tensioners with it (as they start having to compensate for a LOT of movement they wouldn't normally have.

Also pull your front skid plate. Mine was grounding out on the front differential - so I had to install spacers to mode the skid down 1/4". It can also get packed with clay that becomes bricklike when off roading. Caused bad sounds at odd times too.

Is the alternator decoupler more of an issue for 2005's rather than 2006's? I've been noticing more vibration right as I'm coming to a stop when I'm running the A/C. Doesn't do it at idle or under load, only right as I'm coming to a stop.

Do you notice it at all when stopped in reverse?

Mine has been doing this for about 18 months now. I can't find the cause. Some days it's worse than others, but I haven't been able to figure out why. I've checked the motor mounts and transmission mounts, replaced the alternator decoupler, and probed with a screw driver as a listening tool (I hear it best in the cross member ahead of the oil filter, but nothing appears to be hitting anything near there). It spent a day with the dealer and a day with a local mechanic, neither of whom could find anything (both days the rattle seemed less noticeable than normal...) Not sure you have the same issue, but it sounds similar. Mine is difficult to hear outside the vehicle, but very noticeable in the cab. It's loudest right before the vehicle comes to a complete stop...then kind of goes away. Under load or at speed it's not there at all.

At this point I've decided to live with it until something breaks enough that I can find it...

Sounds very similar to "my rattle" - it will be interesting to see if it is the motor mount.

It's not really a rattle in mine, it's more of a vibration I can feel rather than hear. It only happens when I have the A/C on, and am coming up to a stop, under 5 or 10 miles an hour. I've never noticed it in reverse, but then again I don't do a lot in reverse.

Maybe warped rotors in front? I've got almost 55,000 miles, so it may be getting close to time to change the brakes.

Mine is doing this now. I can shake the engine and feel the clicking in the passenger side engine mount. New one is on order from moparpartsamerica.com. Only $33, which surprised me. Less than the deductible on the extended warranty, so I'm going to replace it myself.

I got a brand new one here if you want to get it installed before your new one arrives.

There has been some reports of loose motor mount bolts and as I recall it was the right side :wink:

I tried tightening the nuts, they were already very tight. The clicking seems to be internal to the mount. Search turned up a lot of hits on loose mounts and bad mounts.

My '06 does exactly what you describe. I can't locate the source; at first i thought it might be the exhaust rattling against the frame or cross-member.

I've since given up and embraced this noise which gives my jeep character

I replaced the engine mount on wednesday night. It was definitely broken internally. When I shake it it sounds like there are numerous pieces inside it. The hardest part was getting the old mount and bracket out of the engine bay. It's kind of a 3D jigsaw puzzle to get them out an opening that's barely big enough for them to pass through.

The FSM says you need to remove the fan shroud but you really don't. I got the Jeep up on ramps, then got a floor jack under the oil pan with a block of wood to lift it slightly, then wedged another piece of wood between the oil pan and front crossmember. I removed the floor jack and then removed the upper and lower nuts on the engine mount, then removed the 4 bolts holding the bracket to the engine block. After wrestling the old parts out and the new one in, just reversed the process.
