Just checked the oil this morning on my "new" 05 CRD. The brand new M1 oil was totally black. It has only been in the engine 2 days. Is this normal or did the dealership put all that new oil in the wrong place??

Thanks!

Welcome to the wonderful world of diesel engine ownership. It is completely normal.

Yep, it's normal.... Their are engines here at my work that are so bad that the oil turns black before you even start the engine because of whats left in the head and the oil pan....

I had the same experince myself. I thought the oil should be clean if the stealership shanged it... not sure if they did. I changed mine monday with new 5w40 shell synthitic oil. mine started to go from a nice golden color when checking the level before starting the engine to heading for black as soon as I started the engine. my best friend who used to own a diesel surban, now envys my jeep and help get me in to this diesel stuff, told me its normal. I have only had mine close to a month....still learning :D

Yep the oil is doing it job (keeping the soot is suspension). This is normal for a diesel, and has become more of an issue over the years with the introduction of Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) on these engines. EGR, while having emissions benefits, does create problems for oils and the abrasive nature of the soot particles can wear your piston rings unless you keep relatively clean oil in the engine (in other words shorter interval oil changes than you could get away with in gas power vehicles). Mobil 1, while a great oil in terms of wear management and friction, is not very good at managing soot in diesel engines as it does not suspend soot like a diesel specific oil would. Mobil 1 is a CF rated oil, while the good diesel specific oils are generally using CI-4 and CJ category additive packages now. IMHO a CRD owner should make themselves familiar with the chemical additive packages of the various oils to insure long lived engines with optimal protection.

I may not know that much about diesel engines but the reason you have stated is why I choose Shell Rotella T. it is made for diesel trucks.
