My EGR valve has failed...out of warranty of course and the dealer wants 850.00 (250.00 part/ 600 labor) They said the head has to be removed to get to it...is this correct? Has anyone done one on their own? I know they have a bad habit of going bad. I have already ordered an SEGR kit, which I'll probably end up installing after replacing the EGR valve. I am guessing the valve has failed and could have a vacuum leak of some kind. Any opinions the best thing to do from here? Thanks in advance.

The head does not have to be removed, If you plan on doing the SEGR yourself, replacing the EGR valve will be a snap. All the best!

Don't pay them $800+, I took mine off and cleaned it last weekend in about 2 hours total. If you get the SEGR, then don't wast your time replacing the EGR because after you install the SEGR the new EGR valve will be useless!

If the egr valve is stuck open, you have a problem, segr or not.

And +1 to dumping your dealer. I would CRy to your regional about their incompetence. If they are that stupid, they deserve to be replaced, if they are trying to scam you that badly, still need to be replaced. If you don't complain, it will be allowed to continue. Don't let those crooks get away with this.

If you are going to do the SEGR, then just install a new gasket on one side of the EGR without any holes in it. This will block off the EGR completely (so no flow if it is stuck partially open) and the SEGR will take care of the rest. Save time and money.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I installed the SEGR box care of LocoCRD. Worked awesome and took about 2 hours to install. Very Straight forward...I'll do a write up in the tech section. I am going to make sure the EGR is closed, but I am assuming it is as I am no longer belching any smoke under hard acceleration.

I have a similar problem with my EGR system. The check engine light keeps coming on and the dealer wants $800 to fix it.

A friend of mine who is a mechanic tried to buy the part to do it for me and they would not sell it to him. He was told it was a "dealer only" part and not for sale. I call BS.

But the last two times that the light came on, I changed out or adjusted the air filter and within two days (or about eight starts), the computer reset itself and the light went off. :!:
