Post subject:  By-pass - you bet it's high on the to do list.

Not yet but I am Very serisously saving for one to fit after I do the Provent (which I plan to write up cos it's a bit different to some done in the past).

I reckon this is a really seriously positive move towards increasing the longevity of the diesel: I plan on adding a Kleenoil as they filter down to 0.5 microns absolute. They are commonly fitted to Scania. Mack etc. which we sould work towards.

Never tried the FS2500 on my Jeep, but did put one on my semi with Cummins ISX. Didn't really see any major improvement in oil samples. Soot levels were already <1 ppm most of the time before putting it on because I had disabled the EGR on the engine. Per samples, I still had to change oil before 30,000 miles (Cummins OEM oil change interval 25,000 miles). I have been running my Liberty CRD to 12K miles without bypass and oil samples are fine. The FS2500 wasn't worth the cost for my semi, it most likely would not be worth it for my Jeep. Unless you are just wanting to shell out some extra cash and put something on the Jeep, I wouldn't waste the time. I have taken a few large diesel engines to over 1 million miles without bypass filters and they still had no major mechanical issues. The last one got 30,000 mile OCI for its entire life with Kendall 15w40 and Baldwin oil filters.... I got out of it at 1.4 million miles and it is still being used locally and has not had the engine torn into. Diesels are built extremely well and the VM engine is top line. Maybe the emissions add on stuff is lousy, but the internals are first rate. Before you consider a bypass unit, run a few oil samples on your CRD and see if you would really benefit from one. When you factor in the extra filters, the makeup oil you have to add when you change the bypass, the oil sample cost to make sure the oil is holding up like it should, etc... You might just be well off to use a high quality oil and change it regular, especially since a few quarts of synthetic and a filter are not that expensive. Claims on paper look nice, but keep in mind, those outfits trying to convince you to get a bypass filter are trying to sell a product. They only care about their bottom line, not yours. That is not to say bypass isn't good, just that it is not the greatest thing to come down the pike since the country was founded. The additive packages in modern CJ-4 oils do a fantastic job of keep soot and other particulates under control. There has been millions of miles of test data in the last few years regarding CJ-4 that show it is doing the job well. I will have to search for the issue, but just read a report in a major trucking magazine that shows the oils are doing a stellar job in the emissions equipped diesels and is not the problem everyone feared. Heck, Detroit Diesel has upped their recommend oil change interval now to 50,000 miles on their DD15 engine using CJ-4 oil and no bypass.

But if it makes you feel better.......

Post subject:  Points taken

I fully accept your points Cowpie 1 but you guys can buy oils & filters way more cheaply than in other countries.
We are robbed from every angle.
Agree about the VM motor too.
Sampling oil - now thats downright difficult to do here....it can be done but it is REALLY difficult. The quality oils of which you speak are only available on a commercial level & I am slowly tracking down high quality filters from specialist suppliers......it is just too loose here.....good filters are just so hard to get in this country.....I have only just sourced some decent ones & really good synthetic oil, synthetic blended or whatever are like gold.

Its a different world away from the U.S. & then there are the service / spares grubs...I am sceptical as in this country the auto technology (in vehicle) is moving faster than the spares technology & backup with top of the line products and there is little correlation between what I might term "domestic" applications and "commercial". It sucks really. No doubt I will get some arguement but I'd love to see the solution. Cripes....I've tried hard.

Lots of people running cars here buck for the cheapest options they can & wonder why they fail. I agree with you - use the best you can get but it is always hard to get consumables with an appropriate duty cycle. This mindset is only very slowly changing now that 4WDing is being taken so seriously and more lives have been lost.

Hey. I've read stories in our local mags about 4wding on beaches with NO RECOVERY GEAR....that's the attitude I'm fighting all the way along. One truck on the beach carried it. One rolled with a big tide coming in! Personally, if I go anywhere near offroad I've got mine fully kitted.

I make no arguement with any of your points & if someone can steer me in the right direction (for Australia) I'd be grateful but I am pretty rabid about vehicle maintenance - do it right & unfortunately you have to make these expensive compromises to make it so.....here. That's our only point of difference (between you & me that is). So little measures need to help it along. It is just so hard to do it right really well here. The "domestic" auto industry is quite backward. It is really hard to do it properly at the "domestic" level. There is this damned stigma attached to it that I hate so very much.

I'm gonna cop a verbal beating for this but it has to be said.....and if someone wants to have a go at me start a new thread...let's not hijack this one please.

Even our fuel can be totally questionable away from cities. Australia is the same geographic size as the US with really just about nothing in the middle and this issue is the very one that has killed lots of families here despite the best efforts to maintain the vehicle.

Not everyone has the respect for their vehicles we do....and this is only too common here.

I love this country but she is very unforgiving at times & the attitude that she'll be right mate just doesn't cut it anymore.
Cheers & thanks for raising this.

I decided to go with this:

Not long after, I sold the CRD to Fred (also on these boards). I don't think he's done any UOA yet.
