Early decade VW TDIs had 60k mile change intervals (40k for automatics). All newer diesels have 100k intervals. I hope that's correct for the '05, '06 US CRDs as we have nearly 70k on ours with nothing done.

My maintenance coupon book (came w/ Owner's Manual) lists 100,000 miles for timing belt on 2005 US 2.8L CRD. I'm not surprised that there would be a 60,000 mile interval on the 2.5L engine. As a previous poster mentioned, VW has gone from 60,000 MILES on a 2001 TDI to 100,000 MILES on a 2003 TDI, same engine. The difference being belt material and particularly tensioners.

I am at 99,000 miles, and will be doing timing belt in the next couple weeks.

For what it is worth, I changed out the thermostat about 6,000 miles ago due to its failure. This is not the simple piece you all are used to, that ought to cost $10. Unlike the standard thermostat that is either open or closed, this one evidently is staged, that is, opens in two stages, and serves to manage the ratio of cold and hot water the water pump takes in. BMW (I believe) introduced the design back in the 60s to manage a block-cracking problem that arose when charging hard through the Alps in cold weather. Instead of merely blocking off the flow of hot water out of the engine, this design allows the water pump to circulate water freely, but controls the temperature of that water by adjusting the ratio of hot/cold taken in by the pump. Thus the cost.

Tony has an 02 (01?) 2.5 - so they changed the service interval.

Timing belts have changed a lot for VW's. Originally for a 99.5 TDI (A4 designation) automatic transmission the change interval was 40k miles :banghead: They gradually raised the change interval to 100k and now they have one that is called "lifetime" :ROTFL: So I would "assume" Tony's 02 2.5L has a different belt then the 05/06 2.8L :2cents:

The service interval for the 2.8 in Australia is 100,000 km, and one poor person has had his fail at 96,000

See this thread on the Ausjeepoffroad website.

Well, I got all the parts on irunmiles' parts list and tried to get my local diesel shop to do the timing belt. They have been clobbered by the recession, and lost their Chrysler franchise, and evidently have now lost their diesel mechanic, so I had to take it to a nearby Jeep dealer. Told 'em I'd wait on it, since I had a bunch of work to do on my laptop, no big deal.

So I'm gettin' close to the time they said it'd be done, got a ton of work done, but their waiting room just isn't quite as comfortable as my office, you know? That's when they came to give me the bad news. It seems that somehow their guy managed to put a hole in the AC condenser coil. The timing belt was done, and he was zipping it up when "the accident" happened. They hastened to add that it was their mistake, and they'd replace the coil at their own expense, but the stinger was that they didn't have one in stock, it'd be the next morning.

So they dug a loaner car out of the snow behind the shop, gassed it up, and sent me on the way, saying that it'd only take 'em maybe 20 minutes to put the new coil in and get it back on the road, but, well, they were very sorry they'd broken my Jeep.

The trouble is, now, that UPS can't get the part from Cleveland or Delaware because of the snow. There's evidently one sitting on the runway at the Cleveland airport with my name on it.

So here I be, in prime 4x4, snow piled up to here, let's have some fun on the ROAD time, and I got this little Plymouth mini-car to drive. Bummer!

I looked it up in the owner's manual, UFO, and it said 100,000 miles. Actually, it is in the service book. So it is at 100,000 miles that my '05 CRD is getting the timing belt replaced.

See this thread on the Ausjeepoffroad website.

man now I'm scared, I have real close to 100k miles on mine, guess I should start ordering parts!

It looks like the failures have been mostly on the 2.5l.... true?

I need some clarification on the thermostat. Every place I check shows the thermo as one unit for around $200 and they are rare! I ran into the issue where they wanted to replace the whole fuel/water filter housing unit and I finally got the dealer to realize they actually could get just the filter. Is this the same game? Is there a thermostat inside the housing that I actually can get separately or are you finding the "whole" housing too but just cheaper than I am fining through the dealers?

Also, is there any place that describes the 2.8L timing belt replacement process other than finding and purchasing an FSM?

Any time estimates - Do I need the weekend?

107,000 miles - easy does it (so far)... Has anyone actually heard of a belt blowing out on a 2.8 yet?

Thanks!

The water pump part # listed is correct. I was confused because the websites lists it as only a 2006 part. I received my box of parts yesterday. Most are made in Italy, the tensioner is from Germany. The idler pulleys are from Canada and I'm surprised that they are not metal, rather some type of hard plastic or composite material. No need to purchase 5159019AA because the water pump comes with an O-ring. The timing cover gasket seems small, so I need to make sure there isn't a gasket that I missed.

Did the timing belt gasket end up to be correct?

Yes, the gasket in my parts list is correct.

I am right around 100k miles now also, was wondering the same thing... also wondering if anyone has had the water pump fail..

Is it that most people just do it because of the worry that it might go? or is this something that will fail soon? I want to do it just because of the fact that its rubber and it can't last forever...

I picked mine up for just over 100. However, you'll need the gasket too. Its a sealed unit. See my thread entitled Tow Piglet now nice and Toasty!

A sponser for this forum has offered $738 for the complete parts list. They can add it to their site if enough people ask for it. I use them a lot and they have been very good. They support the military overseas very well. They were my main supplier when I wasa in Germany.

No need to order the water pump O-ring because it comes with the water pump (at least mine did). kapalczynski can confirm when he gets his parts box delivered.

Thanks, I will let you guys know, but I'm sure you are right if yours had it. I did see your post, but ordered it anyway since it was cheap and i definately didn't want to wait if for some reason if it didn't have it like it did in yours. This will confirm for sure if mine does too. :D

The o-ring did come with the waterpump, but not the 3 hole round waterpump gasket.

So I've confirmed there is no need to order the 5159019AA o-ring.
