It took 3 weeks to get everything done when my timing belt broke....1 week to find a mechanic who was confident enough to try a CRD..., afew days to create the parts list. 4 days to get the parts....and..AN EXTRA 3 DAYS BECAUSE CHRYSLER LEFT THE HEAD GASKET OUT OF THE PACKAGE....then another two days for the work to be done.

When you order the parts....check the inventory. Take the cardboard holders apart to be sure the gasket is in there.....geeze...what pain that was. I even had to rent a van for my business to get everything done that needed to be done.

Just did the parts order from moparonlineparts.com for $681.85, got thermostat and waterpump gaskets, just in case they were not included or broken, poo happens.
They were $144.78 cheaper than moparpartsamerica.com who wanted $826.63 shipped.
Sounds like Latin for Caveat Emptor (Buyer Beware).
All parts numbers were good, be sure to include your VIN so you can return any wrong parts, remember, poo happens.
Thanks guys, you are appreciated.

is there a particular reason to change the thermostat at the timing belt change? the thermostat isn't behind the timing cover is it?

Since you have to drain the coolant to change the waterpump, it makes it much less messy to change the thermostat at the same time if it is failing, which seems to be a common theme with the OEM ones.

Also need a timing belt replacement.
At 140,000 mi., I'm long over due.
Looking for a competent reasonably priced dealer in the North East?

Here is a quote I have so fare in the Albany NY area. About 100mi from me.
To replace the following:
Timing belt
Serp belt
Timing cover gasket
Tensioner for timing belt
Thermostat and gasket
Upper and lower radiator hose
We also replaced a serp belt pulley that was loose
We also flushed out the antifreeze
Cost of repairs done $2380.00 plus nys tax.

Does anyone know of a competent reasonably priced dealer in the North East?

Just did the 100K service today. Some notes about the job:

The water pump is a P I T A! By far the worst part of the entire job. I had a 35 year veteran mechanic helping me get this done, and we could see no way to change the water pump without removing the front cover from the engine. This requires removal of the cam sprockets and other pulleys, viscous heater, and thermostat. Changing the water pump adds significant time to the job, but I STRONGLY recommend it because everything has to be removed from the engine to change it out and you don't want to do this job twice!

The cam sprockets are NOT keyed which makes taking them off very risky. When you put them back on you have to be very careful not to let the cams move.

With 98,000 miles on it, my original timing belt was still in good condition with no obvious cracking. It was clearly worn in, but was not showing any signs of failure looming.

This is a great time to drain the radiator and engine of coolant and put fresh coolant in the Jeep. We also marked the injection pump sprocket so it would stay in time. There were no obvious alignment marks on it, so we made our own. Don't know if this is totally necessary, but it certainly doesn't hurt to keep everything in time the way it was from the assembly line. We also had to mark the crank pulley ourselves. This engine was missing the usual alignment marks and it's a very odd design once you get inside.

We started at 8:00AM and finished up after lunch. The CV axle shaft/intermediate shaft was another hour or two of work. I wouldn't recommend a timing belt/water pump change on this engine yourself unless you're pretty good mechanically. It's pretty rough.

Edit: Also, I forgot to mention that I was having no problems with my idler pulleys, tensioner, water pump, etc. But, I replaced all these parts anyway and then KEPT my old parts that are still in good shape so that I have spares in case I need them later. These parts are expensive and may possibly get harder to find in coming years so I figured I'd hold onto these old parts.

LibertyCRD, Thank you for writing up your experience. I, too, plan to change the water pump and have wondered about the removal of the front cover. One question though, did you have to remove the pulley off the injection pump to get the front cover off? Or is the hole in the front cover for the injector pump large enough that it can come off without messing with the pulley? Thanks again. I'm just trying to mentally gather all the possible issues so I am fully ready when the time comes.

After the cam sprockets are gone, the front cover is unbolted, then you can pop the front cover off and slide it around the injection pump pulley. It takes a little work but it comes around the rest of the pulleys OK.

Apparently there are locking pins you can use to somehow lock the cams in place. If you get ahold of a set of those, I'd strongly recommend using them. We didn't use them but probably should have. I guess it slipped my mind or I just didn't know about it.

Various extensions and swivels for your ratchets will certainly help you get to those pesky water pump bolts and water pump elbow bolts. There are two water pump bolts toward the front that required a wrench to get to.

So I dont own a jeep, but am a big time VW TDI guy. I work on TDIs regularly, and had a customer of mine request that I do the belt on his Liberty CRD. He supplied all the parts, the factory manual, and a how-to from this site. Though he assured me I woudnt need special tools to do the service, I came quickly to the conclusion that I'd have to lock things down to get to the waterpump. I wound up machining my own locking pins for cams and crank. They worked great. My hangup with the whole job is that darn waterpump. Its so burried its near impossible to get to it.
I've done hundreds of belts on mk3 jettas. They have a similar waterpump setup, with a housing bolted to the block, and the impeller bolted to the housing. The waterpump that was supplied to me was the entire unit, assembled. It seems to me that it would be far easier to change just the impeller, leaving the existing housing on the motor. I dissasembled the old waterpump to see if it was feasible, and it seems it is. Does anyone know if its possible to just purchase the impeller side of the waterpump. It is sealed by one very thin o-ring.

You can see the split halves in the photo below.

That price is mighty tempting. But I have a friend who used a remanufactured water pump on his Porsche Boxster. I think he was on his 2nd or 3rd 'free' replacement water pump....

Just finished my timing belt/water pump install, Jeep is reassembled and running great!!

Just a little buyer beware advice...I bought a remanufactured water pump (by Crown Automotive), because it saved me ~$80 from the mopar one (that costs $200 shipped from moparonlineparts).

HUGE mistake. Here is a photograph of the mounting faces of the new vs. old:

Image

Look at the size of the mounting holes, and the distance between the alignment pins and the holes. It couldn't even be fit onto the engine. I had to order a new pump, wait for it to arrive, and reassemble everything.

Now I get to wait around and hope I get a refund for the remanufactured pump. So, my $.02? Buy once, cry once. Go with Mopar parts.

I tried to order a timing belt and some parts from mopar parts on line and I got this

" national backorder for the timing belt. There is currently no release date on this part which means I do not know when this part will become available."

I had a appointment with a good mechanic to do the timing belt and water pump that I ordered ten days ago and now that is not going to work is it.

Is there an aftermarket part?

Try RockAuto.com, just ordered my material for the TB change. While most parts have to be ordered through Mopar, the TB is available as an aftermarket...

About the Mopar parts, try multiple online stores. you can shave off some dollars by comparing and go with the most cost-effective deal when taking shipping and fees into account...

Gates makes a timing belt. I believe the part number is T336. Do a search for a Gates dealer.
