Didn't use timing cover gasket due to it just being a dust seal, and the original is reusable. Also didn't use the purchased waterpump O-ring because the waterpump came with one.

How about a list of all of the little coolant hoses and their part numbers such as water pump bypass, etc. I would like to replace every coolant hose at the 100,000 mile service.

Thanks for the tip Tony, I will do that. Looks a lot easier than going to the dealer and pestering the parts man.

For $120.00 (inc $100 core) the tools get shipped to your door, you pay the shipping back and he refunds you the $100. So you are only out $20+shipping back to do a T-belt. Well worth having the right tools...not worth buying in my opinion. :)

painemann asked if anyone has had a water pump fail. I have, with 97K on the ticker. I was searching to see if anyone has had the same bad luck with their water pumps. I guess (hope) not.

I'll be replacing my timing belt while I change out the water pump. Thanks for the parts list and war stories. :D

Someone asked about instructions for replacing the timing belt. I found one here:
http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/1729864 ... 8-meg?da=y

If that link doesn't work, you can go to Green Diesel Engineering's forum and they will have the link for the instructions. It's been pretty accurate so far.

Got mine done at 99875 miles! Found a light diesel mechanic shop that although never worked on VM Motori, he had a high confidence level as he has worked on numerous TDI's both Audi and VW and Mercedes. He was hard to find.

Used the GDE alignment tool rental program and it worked great!

Most "Cummings/Powerstroke/Duramax" shops asked "Jeep Liberty has a diesel? What is that?" or "we dont do timing belts". At that point I walked away. And forget about even approaching a dealership....

But keeping to the subject of part #s and availability: The water pump is now backed up to after August 5th delivery and orders are now being delayed. When I got my pump it said "Made in Slovenia". There was a fella that posted he will use a working removed water pump cause he cant wait that long. So if you are up to needing the timing belt project best thing is to get your order in quickly to get started on the delay!

Other than that Aussie event I have never heard of a belt failing and hear of Liberty CRD's going to 140000 miles on the old one. Remember this is an interference engine...

Why is there a August 4th back-up? Does any shop keep some in inventory?

Hmm maybe I will have to call Germany to see if they have any water pumps in stock.

100k miles seems to be the Standard for changing timing belts on many vehicles.
I miss to old timing chains that lasted forever!
For those who have done this, how difficult was it and how many hours did it take?
Thanks: Bob

Mine is in at the dealer tomorrow for the TB Service along wiht the WP. $748 from the dealer in parts and the 7.5 hours in labor they quoted me. I leave for Germany and will be back in 2 weeks so they have plenty of time.

I'm calling around trying to find someone willing to do this. Scheid Diesel in Lafayette won't touch it with a ten foot pole for some reason...

Not comfortable doing this myself on Grampas Jeep.

Tony has an 02 (01?) 2.5 - so they changed the service interval.

Or they just changed Miles into KM without doing the math.... :D

Didn't NASA lose a very expensive Mars Probe by doing exactly that, too?

Does the dampener require a puller to get it off ?

Thanks!

The dampener does not require a puller. Four small bolts, and mine fell off. I marked it for orientation to the crank, but I don't know if that was necessary or not. Just habbit.

Just did mine this weekend. Overall, I thought that this was one of the easier T-belts to do. I spent about 4 hours start to finish. I didn't use the special tools, I just used the hex wrenches. Starts and runs fine. Timing belts have always been intimidating, but this one wasn't that bad at all.

Took me 3 hours after the T-belt to get the pulley off of my alternator. That was a PIA.

Wife's Libby has developed a noisy idler pulley. We're only at 76K miles. The area under the cover was covered in dust. I was hoping it was the serp. setup, but I removed it to try to isolate it and found the noise was behind the timing cover. :banghead:

The belt looks like it's still in good condition. I can still see the labeling on the belt. I'm thinking about just tossing a set of idlers on it and letting it roll for 24K, then do the belt, tensioner, and water pump. After I've torn down the timing cover, I can't understand why these darn idlers are $50 each. They appear to be the same as a serp. belt tensioner pulley. (I think I paid $10 for the last one I bought for my truck)

Does anyone know a cross over from the Jeep part numbers to OEM for the tensioners? Or does anyone have a used idler laying around I could get for measurements. I'm willing to bet I could source another one that will work for about 1/5 the price.

My suspicions have been confirmed. The OD of the idler pulley is the same as the pulley I bought for my dodge. I noticed the bearing numbers are different and also different sizes. But now it's just a matter of finding the "car" out there that uses the same size one. If time allows tomorrow, I'll clamp the belt to the cam sprockets and CP3. I'll also try to clamp the belt at the crankshaft as well to prevent things from moving. I'll try to take the pulley to the parts store and have them match it up.

edit:
I have found replacement bearings for the pulley as well. ($5 each!) But I'm not keen on trying to press in and out bearings on a plastic pulley. The bearing for the idler stock is a 6303 series. The one I have in front of me is a 6203. Which has the same 17mm ID shaft diameter. I'll have to measure more tomorrow to see if there's any chance of these $15 pulleys working.
