Post subject:  Timing Belt--How Can I Get Someone to Do This?
Hello, friends.

I have a Liberty CRD with 92k miles. I want to get the timing belt and related parts replaced proactively (I once had a premature timing belt failure with another vehicle, resulting in ruined valves and a virtually worthless car).

Anyway, I've been shopping around extensively, and read the extremely useful info on this site. I live in the Chicago area, and have called nearly a dozen mechanics. They all want to charge me $700-$800 for the parts alone. None of them will allow me to source the parts because "they can't guarantee them, etc." One guy admitted that he makes money on the parts, and has to charge a mark-up to make a profit on the job. Others won't touch the job because they don't handle diesels, or this particular model, or they claim they can't find the parts.

I see there's a company on the net that has a complete kit: http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_ ... =1&sort=4a. I called them and they basically said everything is Mopar, except the belt, which is Gates, and the rollers, which are Crown (a Chinese source). This kit is going for $559.

I'm able to do some work on the CRD myself, but this particular job is a definitely over my head. So the only alternative, as I see it, is to find a reputable mechanic who is willing to use the kit provided by me (which is proving difficult), or bend over and pay an exorbitant amount for the parts. Any thoughts on this? Does anyone know somebody in the Chicago area who knows what they are doing and would be willing to use parts that I provide? Is there some other way?

Thoughts on that list
1. you don't need the tstat or tstat gasket as part of the TB/water pump job. If your tstat is working fine, temp gauge sits vertical or just a bit left of vertical, just leave the tstat alone. It can be replaced at any time in the future with the loss of only a quart of so of coolant.
2. don't bother with the timing belt cover gasket as it's only doing a poor job of keeping dust out and doesn't usually tear during the job.
3. I think the "O" ring comes with the WP but am not sure. In anycase if you use Sir Sam's WP front 1/2 replacement trick you will save lots of time and not need the WP gasket.

I'm FINALLY back from my overseas deployment, and as mentioned previously in this thread, I got all my parts from ID Parts (whose customer service was excellent, BTW). I also bought the cam pins and crank/cam holding tools, as I expect to keep the vehicle long enough to justify the cost. I hope to start the timing belt/water pump/thermostat/fan coupling/alternator pulley declutch replacement jobs soon. Even though there a useful threads I've read, I thought I'd check one last time to see if anybody has any other useful advice. Any tips/etc will be GREATLY appreciated!

I recently did the TB change which included changing the Thermostat & gasket. Now it heats up quickly and the temp gauge registers at half or about 216F without any additional modifications. The stock t-stats tend to relax over time and are always slightly open thus not allowing the vehicle to heat up properly.

Some change the TB without changing the t-stat. To me this is a good reason to change it! I haven’t seen any discussion related to the relaxed or weak spring in the t-stat. Others seem to be trying all kinds of other solutions to accomplish what just replacing the original t-stat will do. Yes, it’s a little more money but in the long run it should be better performance & a happier wife who doesn’t like riding in a cold vehicle during NY winters. :D

No the lower one, upper fitted perfectly, now I m worried that of all these hoses got replaced except lower and one day this will be the one to fail.

Of course it will, it's a pain to get too.
my upper hose was short by an inch, so I'm still using my original. When i pulled my lower off at 105,000 miles it was still in really good condition.
which reminds me, becareful with the radiator, i managed to put a hole in it pulling out that beast of a fan mechanism.

The parts already cost me $530. Now the labor is going to be another $1000. This is getting really expensive really quickly! It would just about be cheaper to just let the belt slip and blow the engine. Or am I missing something? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd encourage you to see if there are any other LibCRD owners near you. We are all getting to timing belt change age at about the same time. Last summer, 4 of us got together and had a T-belt change party. Many hands makes (uhh, however that phrase goes...) the job go faster.

15 hours seems a little long for a repair shop. All told probably only took me 7-8 hours in my gravel driveway, raining and my first time. Longest part was removing the fan and gouging my radiator. Also reading and re reading various posts and what not on how to do it. If you find the tools you might be able to get some "guy" to do it for you. It's not brain surgury. Good luck. If you were closer I'd help you with it.

There is a fair amount involved with the job, but I would think an experienced mechanic could do it in 8 hours. Where are you located?

After the first couple timing belt jobs, it should take 3-5 hours depending on if you change the water pump or not. I would definitely recommend the WP change. 15 hours means the shop does not know what they are doing or they want to retire after doing your CRD.

I found someone to do the labor on my timing belt replacement. However, he doesn't have the special tools needed. I understand you can get those on loan. Is that correct? If so, where? Thank you.
