| Post subject: | New alternator time?? Stupid NEW Decoupler came loose! |
Well a few months ago I had to replace the decoupler pulley and it was very simple. Monday, after driving the Jeep about 500miles up north and back my girl was driving it and said she heard a whine noise. I forgot she has said anything and she went to start it again and a nasty noise started. She shut it off and came a got me, When i heard it I thought it was something like a valve hitting the piston. Well i noticed the belt was off the edge of some of the pulleys and the decoupler had come loose and was only hanging on by the tip of the alt shaft. The threads are trash, and the bearing seemed loose. Not sure what happened. I just used the impact to tighten it on and it was find for months. IAT sent me a new decoupler and I just put it on with the impact again and I attempted to tighten the heck out of it, I got it so tight that it would not spin free when I put the allen in the front of it and twisted the pulley to the left. I loosed it up a little and it worked again, so I just tighten it again but not as much as used lots of red lock-tite. Hope it stays! Will post some pics. |

Hmm you are number 2 with stripped threads.... IAT makes these things from Chinese steel? OEM one on mine replaced with OEM decoupler at 80k km, I'm now at 150k and no problems. |

There was some lively discussion a while back about how much torque was necessary when reinstalling these puppys. As I recall the general concensus was that since the belt direction kept the pulley tightnened, if it didn't fall off within the first five minutes, it would continue to torque itself down. Perhaps this needs to be revisited. I changed my own pulley out on tuesday and really cranked down with the impact driver. Hopefully, I won't have this particular issue 6 months down the road. |

I cranked down too hard this time, I kept the allen in the pulley and twisted the pulley counter clockwise (they way it should slip) and it wouldn't budge. I loosened it up and it was fine, so I locktited the heck out of it and got it tight but not too tight. GOOD LUCK |

The torque should 60 ft/lbs - but you'd need the miller special tool to apply it http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=412022#412022

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=412022#412022 ![]() WEll I put a replacement decoupler on and I am worried that I tightened it too much so because after i put it on with the impact it wound t slip backwards (counter clockwise) like it should. So I loosened it and lock tightened the heck out of it and didn't tighten it so much. It did rotate backwards the second time but it didn't seems as easy to turn it as (I think ) it should be. Now I'm worried that it still isn't doing what it should be, slipping backward at shut down. So I would like to get another one and get it to the right torque for piece of mind. I don't want the thing to fall off again when were up north/out of town. The problem is when the last one came off, the belt didn't come off the pulley just spun on the end of the alternator shaft and now the hex head that used to be on the end of the alt. shaft is worn away. WILL THE TOOL STILL WORK? If I spend the extra cash on the tool I can get it to the right torque correct? Thanks! |
