I have searched this forum about the rattles and noise coming from the engine compartment.

I had a bad alternator de-coupler... fixed and sounds better but I still have this racket .

I put the Liberty up on a lift today that pick the chassis up i.e. the tires are hanging free.

Upon doing this I couldn't was not able to duplicate the noise, neither while in park or with the tranny if F or R.

Looking at the motor mounts they appear OK. I read on the CRD forum that a fellow change his and after removing it noticed there was something rattling inside the mount?

Anyway, we set the Liberty back down on the ground and had my friend creep under the vehicle and I tried to get the car to make the noise. I was able to get the noise to come back so-to-speak while parked, in F as well as R. Turning the car off while in gear worked great too.
The mechanic did the broom handle on the motor mount and he agrees that is where he thinks the sound is coming from. I should report that the noise is coming from the LH side or drivers side.

I am tempted to take a video of this and post on you tube? I am not going to waste my time taking it to the dealer. I was maybe the third out of 4 CRD's that my dealer ever sold.

Anyway.... thanks everyone for your input!

Tom

I had that problem as well,Is it more evident when in R or D with foot on brake? Those motor mounts notoriously come loose, after the second time I put some locktite blue on it and torqued the hell out of it,no rattles for 20K miles..........H

That is some great info, my black CRD makes a noise while in gear, this noise is not present on the silver CRD with lower miles, I will check the bolts this week end when I do an Amsoil oil change. I was thinking an exhaust system vibration at first?

I did not check to see if the bolts were lose. They appeared tight. The appearance of the motor mounts looked fine too.

This is what is very puzzling.

VegiH your mounts were OK it was the bolts that required tightening?

Thanks

Tom

I have a sound that its only noticeable at idle in drive that sounds like yours. I'll check my mounts also, good luck and thanks for the tip!

Yeah, mine has a sound of nuts grinding in idle, but it is not the TC.

I had the bad decoupler pulley on one jeep. The sound was more squeaky, and it was present in park and drive, but not while moving. Loudest while stopped in drive. The belt tensioner was also moving like a blur. Check that.

The other jeep had a bad engine mount. This was more of a rattling sound, loudest when stopped in drive, gone in park and while moving. Grab the engine by the oil fill tube and shake it side to side. Or lay under it and push up on the motor while you keep one hand on the motor mount. You may feel the clicking inside it. I tried tightening the motor mount nuts, but they were still tight. There was no visible damage to the mount, and you probably won't see any. Once I got it out you could hear the broken parts inside.

when my motor mount bolt was loose the tension was less then spec, and was canterleving causing that bowl of marbles should in R and D with brakes on.It wouldn't do it in N as much and not with out brakes applied. The loctite is so the vibration of the drivetrain(we all know diesels vibrate) does not loosen it again.May be short term I don't know, just a shade tree greaser......but I haven't heard the insepid noise for 20 K miles.... :D

That is the sound, and I do have a tube of loc tite, so that will be part of my WE maintenance. I hope it is as simple as that. I can not even here the noise out side of the vehicle, only on the inside with the brake applied and in gear.

Hey guys, that did the trick! Took out the bolts one by one, put on the Loctite, tightened them up, and my Jeep no longer grinds nuts in gear

BTW, this should be moved to the CRD Tech Only section of the board.

They seemed pretty loose to me, I could put a 18mm open end wrench on the bolts that go to the block and tighten them, or remove them pretty easy. I thought they should have been a lot tighter, I just could not do the top let side bolt in the front, could not get to it from underneath. I was doing an oil change, it was up on ramps. I will try again next time I have it in shop.

PS if you ever need to replace that motor mount (worn out bushing etc) hit that bolt with a small benzo torch for 5-10 seconds and voila it backs right out.......this is why I used "blue lockite" for its only down fall is heat (1200F for short increments) to loosen) if any one knows how to move this to tech feel free as I do not have that computer savviness....glad to help...........H

I am going to crawl up under and see if my bolts are loose. I would have never thought they would back off but anythings possible.

I broke the two lower bolts loose on the LH side and used Locktite 232 and re-tightened them. Sadly, this didn't fix the problem.... I am guessing the motor mounts are next?

We just replaced the engine mounts on our 06 CRD, it made a world of difference. The vehicle has 83k on it and been abused off-road. The old mounts had broken pieces inside and rattled when shaken...not stirred. The drivers side mount was in worse shape.

With new mounts, the vibration (ground out) we noticed in drive and reverse has disappeared...good as new! We don't intend on changing our driving habits, so this may become a general wear and tear item.

Best of luck fixing the issue

Looks like a pretty cheap fix too.
