| Post subject: | Flat Cargo Floor |
I know from a few posts that some, like me, are interested in constructing a Flat Cargo Floor. I do not use the back seat so it is removed. I plan on building a section to replace where the rear seat resided to make the whole cargo area "smooth". I am not sure exactly what materials I will go with yet...but I want to build two lift up panels that can be removed for easy access to the area under the new flat floor. I might also build two side panels for access thru open back doors. I don't know for sure if they will be hinged or just removeable. This project will most likely start happenning very soon. I might even make some "guides" so that others can copy any design I come up with. Depending how it turns out...who knows. |

Darby. I've been thinking that 2 long sections of plywood cut to the contour of the insides of our KJ's and somehow fasten together in the center would work for those of us who want to retain our back seats but occasionally have the need to cary larger loads and protect the upholstery at the same time. Maybe a long piano hing in the center?? Joe |

Problem is that it will never be flat with the seats in the back, You could make the whole floor higher and get away with that design...it would have to be as high as the highest point on the back seat after folded down. |

Yet another reason I prefer the XJ over the KJ. XJ's are lower too and that makes loading easier and the with the seats folded down the floor is flatter. |

If you build the very back section about 3" taller than the floor and made that space into a drawer...you could even out the floor for a flat cargo space. There is always a way... |

Hrm... I went out and looked at this last night. For those of us who want to keep the back seats in, I'm thinking it's a good idea to raise the floor ~4-6 inches. Anything less would make for a fairly small storage space and, for me at least, the whole point of raising the floor is to add some places to put a first aid kit, extra oil, shop rag, gorilla wrench, etc. Maybe build a custom fit raised platform with a double-hinged, carpeted floor. That way, when the back seats are up, you could have a completely flat surface (two sheets of carpeted plywood on top of one another); when the back seats are down, you could fold over the top sheet of plywood; and, if you need access to the storage area, you could lift up the bottom sheet of plywood. The only reason I would make a lift access to storage, rather than a drawer, is because of that little raised plastic border that runs along the outside edge of the cargo area... Does that make sense? |

You can have a centered drawer with two side flaps that pull out for more storage in the current cargo area...and then have a front piece that can be added over the passenger seats. It will be different in size and shape than the back section but maybe it could fit up against the rear seats when they are in the upright position. |

Pretty sure the fabrication section has some write ups from some gassers that have done this. |

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... sc&start=0 This looks pretty sweet, but how to create a level bed when the rear seats are down is still an issue... |
