I miss his folksy wisdom and sharp wit! Have sent him several PM's and they are still hanging in my outbox. Does anyone know his status?

Being one to spread rumors, outrageous gossip and complete lies:
I hear he was playing his guitar soft and slow, a sweet young thing caught one look at him and ....
The motor is blown, he is on the run from her father and he is in hiding while working on the latest mod.
God bless Texas! :SOMBRERO:

I heard that he's on the run from the EPA and living on a remote island in the South Pacific. Currently he is married to 3 (or maybe 4, now) 18 yr-old native girls and is teaching a course on thermodynamic efficiency at the local volcano. They call him "The Grand Toobah."

Is it possible his mods allowed him to drive so fast that he's travelling backwards in time?

Only if he added the Flux Capacitor Detail Package to his CRD when he got it, and has since added either a Mr Fusion or found a decent supply of plutonium. :pepper:

Post subject:  Re: What happened to gmctd?

:) Appreciate the interest, guys - truth is, I have been long involved in moving from my residence of 45yrs in West Houston to the deep piney woods north of Cleveland, Texas, with all the collected automotive, mechanical, and electrical paraphenalia acquired in the intervening age from my youth to my silver years - required two 40ft containers, three 20ft containers, a 20ft 18-wheeler box, and four 24ft gooseneck lowboy loads - finished up and in-place on-site Sept 2010, current residence an old RV camper - am now involved in sorting, separating, stacking, and preparing for winter - maybe about 2yrs till it's all organized - drove the subject KJ CRD, disastrously parked it under an oak tree, more on this in a sec - one more 24ft trailer load with the big '89 gmctd crewcab Diesel 4wd dually - used the '96 6sp Dodge dually to tow everything out here - drove the '01 Dodge, parked it, but not under or near an oak tree.

To wit, after one of the last moves we were sitting in bro-in-law's garage during an intense thunder-storm, with frightening lightning displays, not 25ft from the li'l Jeep, when an intense white light occured at the same instant as the ear-drum shattering sonic blast, temporarily blinding and deafening us - when we recovered, the oak tree adjacent the Jeep was smoking, all the bark from the tallest branch, down the Jeep-side of the tree, and on the root under the Jeep, had been completely removed and splintered, including erupting the ground covering the root - the alarm was sounding off from sheer terror, but, aside from all the splintered bark covering it, The li'l KJ seemed to have survived the ordeal - I decided to move the Liberty to another location after the storm had subsided, but the locks would not respond to the key fob - manually unlocking and opening the driver's door, I immediately noticed the odor of char-broiled electrical - hmmmm, not good, I thought - placed the key in the ignition switch, nothing, no indicators, lights or lighting - got out, opened the hood to intense heat and increased odor of severe electrical damage - used the flashlight to inspect various areas of wiring, but no evidence of blackened insulation - proceded to remove the new Red-top gel-cell battery, only to find it was the source of the heat, and difficult to touch - got one cable removed, checked with the DVM to find 00.000v, totally dead - resistance-check across the Pos-Neg cable terminals revealed 0 ohms, dead short - but where? - no burned insulation could be seen, yet burned insulation odor was very prevalent, even with the hood open - later, after cooling, the gel-cell took a full recharge, passed the appropriate load-tests - much later, couple of months, reconnected the fully-charged Red-top, no arcing, all electrical, incl the alarms, proved functional - but no start, not even a click from the relay or starter - which would be a correct response, since PCM will prevent starting in event of imminent component failure - by then, the burned odor semed to be stronger along the driver's side fender and firewall, but no damage in the electrical center, with all it's relays and fuses - narrowed it down to the glow-plug relay, which was welded to the harness connector - the connector is melted and fused to the terminals, and the relay terminals are blackened and fused to the surrounding plastic case, yet no blackening of the wiring in the harness to the glowplugs, ignition, and control - not even browned - go figger

So, there it sits, needing my help, but must wait it's turn in the due course of events required as I settle-in here in the deep woods over this Fall-Winter season - took a month-and-a-half to get sewer, another month to get hot water, then a month after the first cold spell to get heat in this old camper

Ha!! Bet yer sorry you even asked, now, huh (how he does rattle on!)? But, life goes on, and then, there's my new project, a 1986 Jeep Cherokee 2.1L TurboDiesel 5sp 4dr, all original, needing a gentle application of care and discovery........................

Nice score on that old POS! Rare find indeed.

When the time comes to work on that I suggest you head over to comancheclub.com (ya I know an MJ site not a XJ site, but one of the guys there is particularly knowledgable about the french contraption known as the 2.1 TD)

Will do, Sam - thanks for the tip - and thanks for the type descriptor: KJ WJ MJ RJ XJ PJ BJ - all very confusing ....well, except for that last one...............

Welcome back!

(although Cleveland is still close enough for the hurricanes to come through - and dump a foot or two of rain on you - but it makes neat trees)

Sorry about the KJ - lightning, wiring harnesses and computers do not mix well

(wasn't the 2.1 a Renault?)

Yes. Image

Though for all its faults they seem to keep running quite a while.

I have an almost-complete engine-side wiring harness if you want it, only needs the two connectors on the airbox. Welcome back!

Aaaahhh, welcome to the pineywoods!

Watch your speed going down 59...my Son-N-Law is a State Trooper in Porter and surrounding backroads. Dont need any L.O.S.T. friends becoming paying customers to the State (he's got plenty to do).

Post subject:  Re: What happened to gmctd?

Thanks, guys - and thanks geordi, for the info - can't find anything wrong with my harness, but haven't yet picked up a replacement glow plug relay, only 35bucks thru online dealers, so time will tell

Correct, all - the '86 is a Renault 2.1L 126cuin 85hp TurboDiesel, tilted ~15* to the left - has a small ~6" shock-absorber mounted between the chassis and a bracket on the lower right front of the engine (Diesel shudder, anyone?) - instrumentation is coolant temp, oil press, combo 15psi Boost\vacuum, and tachometer - Diesel Fuel Only, of course - preliminary findings indicate an AirResearch wastegated turbocharger - OHC engine is all aluminum, 2v head and block - crank-driven toothed rubber timing belt drives the camshaft and German-made Roosa Master IP (a Stanadyne Brand) - IP and injectors are mechanical - Bosch timed-glow system - Stanadyne fuel filter\manager - have not located the lift pump, tho have not been long under the vehicle - Donaldson air filter housing - diaphragm-type vacuum pump for the brake booster, cruise, and HVAC system mounted on the left side of the engine block - charge-air cooler behind the right headlite, ducted to area between lite and radiator - engine oil cooler between condenser and grille - remote oil-filter assy on the right fender well, incl bypass valving and oil press switch - engine-coolant reservoir similar in shape, size, and position to KJ unit - v-belt driven clutched fan, CW rotation - CCV draws from the aluminum valve cover thru a rectangular thermo-plastic vapor-separator box to the 'charger inlet, precip box has a bottom drain connected to the oil pan (hmmmm, where have I seen that config?) - at 90kmi, 'charger inlet is not exceeding oily, as has been seen on the KJ, tho the Cherokee has been in storage since 1993 - BW T5 5sp manual trans - Girling hydraulic clutch setup - and, of course, the coil-sprung four-trailing link track-bar located Dana straight front axle, minus the front diff - easy change-over to 4wd, by subbing-in the Dana 44 drive front axle and adding the NP xfer case, for the intrepid gear-head - as I earlier stated, application of care and thrill of discovery - more later..............

Later - found it, low driver's side behind the vacuum pump - vacuum pump is driven by a timing-belt driven intermediate shaft, which in turn drives a gear on a common shaft between the vac pump and engine oil pump - intermediate shaft also has a cam lobe to operate the diaphragm-type fuel lift pump, which, as we all know, is designed for pull-type service, pulling fuel from the rear-mounted fuel tank to the engine - more even later.............

Later: whups, my bad! What appeared to be the fuel pump was just a dirt-grease-grime distorted underside view of the vacuum pump - Stanadyne fuel manager head connects directly to the IP fuel inlet - if there is a fuel lift pump it must be in the tank - so far, I've found only one wire to the tank, which would be the fuel level gauge - later..........
