Post subject:  Odometers and GPSes....

On my last trip to Moab, I had my nice Garmin 60sx tell me our distance. I compared it to the CRD Trip meter and found the mileage to be off about a 4%. 100 miles on the odometer was really 104. Yet, my Speedometer of off by about 10-12% negatively. Liberty's 60 MPH is really about 53 or 54 MPH. I'm running stock sized tires 225/75-16

I love my Garmin 60SX for the odometer, trip meter, average speed, Average moving speed. I can't seem to find those feature on most "car" Navigation systems. Do anybody know an up to date GPS with these features? Need to find a ~4" GPS screen for my daughter that is just starting to drive and would love to have one with some of the trip statistics. The closest I can find is in the Motorcycle versions (Zumo Series) and sadly they are an arm and leg...

Thoughts? Yes I'm bad posting over here in the CRD section -- but you guys are way cool!

Need to post this in the regular "CRD Love That Torque" section rather than the tech section. You'll get more response that way.

BTW I have a $100 Garmin nuvi 200 from Sam's Club that does all of that. Just don't leave the vehicle sitting and forget to unplug it. . .

I can confirm your numbers. I have a Garmin Nuvi 260 and it reports a 4.4% difference from my odo (gps distance is greater). Also 65mph on speedo ~ 60mph on gps. Always thought these were competing figures but i've read other posts similar to this.

I put 235/70-16 Michelin's on and my Magellan 1700 claims the error to be down to about 2.5 % on the speedo. I've not checked the mileage.

I've heard this matter discussed before.
The speedometer/odometer in the dash is controlled by the BCM (heck all the gauges are) and the BCM should be programed with your correct tire size however I understand that there isn't very much constancy with tire sizes. Could the difference between the GPS and the odometer be because of inaccurate tire sizing? Also remember that depending on the reception of your GPS it's accuracy isn't perfect, that could throw off your readings.

I've actually seen GPS speedometers that you can buy for your vehicles. Imagine, a speedometer that never needs programing/calibration?
