towing capacity & rene option

Was wondering if the capacity was more or the same as the gasser? Also did the CRD come as a renegade option?

All the Liberties are rated to tow 5k, however I would say that the CRD has better 'tow ability' with the torque down low.

The CRD was only available as a Sport or Limited. No Renegade option.

Liability-rated by marketing for the USA is the same as the weak-sauce 3.7l V6, 5k lbs. However, the EXACTLY THE SAME European version is rated at 7k lbs.

When properly equipped, I have pulled that 7k lbs without any problems, and stopped it as well.

The best was getting 19mpg while doing it!

I'm probably the person most likely to be voted "insane towing fool" b/c I've equipped my CRD with a pintle hook, and actually USE IT for hauling really heavy stuff like this:

That is a 70kW generator equipped with its own hydraulic brakes, weighing in at 6840 lbs. With the 4500 that the CRD scaled at... That is 11,340 lbs being pulled at 19mpg by a FOUR CYLINDER ENGINE!

Take that, Mr I-Gots-a-Hemi driver! Bwahhahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha! :lol:

5k it probably the reasonable limit for someone that doesn't have accessory brake systems for the trailer and/or pretty extensive experience having the trailer "wag the dog" so-to-speak. I will say that the CRD does a darned good job pulling other CRDs up muddy hills in the woods like this one (notice the well-muddied strap):

Kudos for Scott for giving my front tow hooks the ride of their life a few times...

Funny... I've been the one DOING the pulling plenty of times. Most notably, a Ford Explorer that was so stuck in mud that I pulled it out SIDEWAYS b/c that was easier, and a fully loaded 10k lb box van that was in a hole about 8 inches deep. Dgeist, this was in Savannah, BTW... So you know what mud season gets like in Ga. Yuk.

Oddly enough, that generator in the picture had been parked not 20 feet from the truck, and the genset didn't have any problems being dragged out by the CRD. Once the truck finished making it's hole to wallow in... I had to work to drag that one out. :lol:

So... What happened that YOU had to be the pull-ee rather than the pull-er?

I have towed over 5K with mine in Germany with no issues. I know in Germany th eCRD 2.8 is rated to 7700. I beleive the Rene was avalible in th e2.8 and 2.5 in Europe.

Yes, it'll tow that...

I've tugged this camper around with a 2002 3.7L KJ, 2004 3.7L KJ (not for long thankfully), 2004 Hemi Durango, 2005 CRD KJ, and a 2008 3.0L diesel Grand Cherokee. It's about 5600# and has the frontal area of a barn as you can see.

You will want some strong tires (load range E) and I prefer the ride with Air Lift 1000's in the back. If your trailer is long, you will require some sort of trailer sway control, I've used the Hensley Arrow with good results so far. (note- neither the load range E's or the Air Lifts are in that picture)

Keep calm, keep the torque converter locked up and the 'little tractor that could' will crank out torque to keep you truckin all day long.
