Not warming up

My liberty isn't warming up past much past a quater on the temp gauge. I'm looking at making a radiator shield out of a political sign(plastic card board). Probably will cut hole out in front of intake and one hole in middle. Any suggestions on hole placement or pictures of what you did would be appreciated.

It took me an hour but I found the receipt I put in a safe place so I wouldn't loose it. I bought a Fia winter front /bug screen from Truk Toys in west fargo, ND TrukToys.com 1-800 218-0609 the cover is made to fit our grill opening and has self sticking little round snaps that you hook the cover to in about 10 spots. The center of the cover has 2 openings that you can leave open in a little warmer weather or you can completely close the cover in very cold weather ,it stays closed with heavy duty Velcro they also include a very nice bug screen for summer use, although the alignment of the snaps are not as exact as they are for the winter screen. If it's not warming - your viscous heater may not be working.

he had 3 grill slots blocked, 3 open for the radiator and 1 routed to air intake.

Along the line of the Fia blanket, instead of covering the radiator itself, just block off some or all of the 7 openings in the grille. Cut the sign to an appropriate shape to fit into the openings from the front, a couple tystraps will hold them in place. Only takes a couple minutes to add or remove openings depending on how much cooling you need.

With the V6 airbox, I'm not worried about the air intake behind the grille. Last New Year's coming back from Texas, with temps in the teens and 20's, I had all but the 2 openings on either side of the hood latch blocked off - sufficed quite well at those temps for a long 70 mph interstate trip.

Even with the stock air intake, completely covering/blocking the grille doesn't seem to be a concern - there's still a good bit of air flow coming in under the bumper - and I haven't seen any reports of problems from those using a Fia blanket along with a stock air intake.

I think i'm going to try and cut out and fit the plastic card board behind grill insert to see how that looks. I'm still trying to decide if i like the fia and what the snaps will look like when not using it.

When i roll down a long hill the CRD cools off.
Bought a Alaska Tent product, black, and very happy with it.
$80. I think.
Measure 3 times, give them the measurements.
Do not forget the lower opening plus 2".

you may not have a properly working thermostat.

Also, I think the thing about the vicious heater helping to heat the engine coolant if bunk, from everything I have read it seems to only heat the cabin coolant for creature comfort(when the heat is turned on).

Agree about the thermostat - if he's not getting above 1/4 on the temp gauge, even when driving, sounds like a good possibility the thermostat might be stuck open.

I have seen the viscous heater cycling on and off while idling in cold weather without the heat being turned on - had the hood up and was watching it while checking out other items. It came on today when I took the beast to get it inspected - had been sitting for 3 days in 20's at night, engine was stone cold when I started it - heard/felt the viscous heater kick in shortly after the engine started.

last weekend after installing my Samco hoses finally I rigged a winter front of my own.

what I did though was measure and cut a small section of tarp and popped off my front (chrome) grill. Then sandwiched the tarp between the inside of the nice chrome (plastic) grill and the black plactic section behind it. I left one slot nearest to each headlight exposed. So all 5 center slots are completely blocked.

while I percieve it warms up slightly faster then usual I don't see any difference at all. tough to say for any mpg impact either with our erratic weather lately (30-70+ F) and winter blend fuel.

Have you noticed the engine retaining it's temperature after doing the cover. Mine temperature drops if i'm not pushing the go pedal.

You've got a point about the thermostat, because last winter i had no problem with temperature except the coldest of days. I live in Mississippi, it's not even the coldest part of the winter yet. It was in the upper 50's yesterday and it barely got past a quarter. Sounding alot like the thermostat. I'm going to install a cover, but it looks like i need to check on the thermostat too. THANKS

the past week has been warmer and I haven't had the front on long enough to notice much of a change. most mornings going to work it's about freezing but afternoons are 50+

the only time I've ever see my temp gauge drop was after driving over passes in the mountains in sub zero and single digit temps and coasting down the other side not being in the throttle.

The other time was similar low temps and traffic came to a near halt on the interstate and even after a couple minutes did see the needle slide to the left.

but again those examples we without a winter front. I would think with the front it may at least keep it warmer a bit longer in similar conditions.

My wife drives the CRD, and last two days have been cold in the mornings and mild in the afternoons. She reports the temperature gauge barely up 1/4, but she is getting good heat into the cab. It sounds like a stuck open thermostat. Before I spend the $$ to get a new one, can I get some experienced members to concur?

Are there gaskets required? Which coolant is installed in these beasts?
