In the "cant begin planning early enough" department, I am looking for an external mount for a Jerry Can which would (hopefully) allow the spare tire to stay as I will be taking an extra spare on the inside.

I am making a trek next summer to Labrador City Canada which for me is about 1000 mi each way with about 500 of each leg on Rte 389 which is a hard pack gravel road with sparse settlements and fuel. Although there should be no problem with the reach between stations I would like to be prepared.

I am looking for a metal can and holder if that makes a difference. I tried a web search but could find nothing for the Liberty that meets my requirements. I am willing to put both spares inside if needed, but think the fuel should be carried externally.

Having been in a similar situation i can only recommend a roof rack.

Your other option for a nice can mount is to replace the rear bumper with the rock lizard, and it is VERY expensive.

Considering you want to carry a secondary spare (a good idea) you can also mount your spare in the rack, with your cans, and firewood, and be on your way.

If your crafty you can make your own cross bars and just buy a cheaper rack, i dont have one but i'm going that way and, it seems there are several options for under 200 bucks.

If you want a bumper, knock yourself out, they are very nice. But by the time you get one with a spare holder and a Jerry can holder your in the 1k dollar range w/o shipping. And you still have your secondary spare in the cargo area of your liberty.

Did the Dempster Hyw last year. Just took a 5 Gal Jerry Can (actually a contemporary plastic can) inside my Thule roof pod. It is diesel fuel so there is a lot less to worry about,there were no fumes at all. At the end of the unpaved part of the trip I just poured the can into the tank so it was empty most of the trip. If this is the only time you will be that remote you may not want to make any mods to your Jeep. At the slower speeds on the Dempster (45MPH) the range on a tank of fuel is wonderful. I could have gone the 450 miles without stopping at the single refueling spot but decided to fuel up anyway. I also carried a high lift jack and never used it, just insurance.


Now back in LA my red Libby is all cleaned up and looks a shinny as the local Libbys that have never been put in 4WD

I made my own. Carries two cans on each side of the spare tire. It just bolts onto the same bolts as the spare holder.

Also notice that it is just above the license plate. Same as a pickup truck with the tail gate down. Works great for those sneaky pesky photo radar cameras too. 50 state legal.

That would be illegal in many places as there is partial obscuring of the rear lights. Additional weight on the rear tyre storage bracket will damage your door. There have been fair few damaged just carrying the spare over corrugated tracks. The thin sheet metal of the rear door lacks the internal structure to support the addition of any weight (be it ski racks, bikes, etc) eventually your will bend the door skin and the tyre will be hitting the rear bumper. Best place is a low profile tank on the roof, or even better a long range tank replacement.

I got hit by your speed cameras in a rental car near Perth. I had to pay the fine plus a load to Hertz for their office tracking me down in the states. It was for 10 KPH over. You guys are good at speed traps. I never even saw the flash.
