Post subject: Good deal? Or should I run from it?
PostPosted: Wed Nov 18, 2009 3:43 pm
Hello Everybody,

I recently found a heck of a deal on a CRD 06 with 26k miles for about 15k. The only downside is after talking with the guy enough he said that the hood, bumper, and front fenders were replaced but the CRD was in running condition. Radiator and condenser were not damaged according to him. Would you guys consider this or would you just get away from it? The downside is the CRD is atelast a 5-7 hour drive from me so I don't want it to be a wasted trip but what do you guys and gals think?

Did he say why they were replaced (what did he hit?)

Then the body damage may have only been superficial.
That is why hoods, grills, and fenders are replaceable.
Make sure the title is clean too.
More important than replacement body parts.

Get more details about the accident or reason for the replacment. If nothing was serious or damaged the frame in anyway then there should be no problem if everything looks fine.

My Jeep was in an accident before I bought it. it was parked and sideswiped by a passing car. the front drivers door and mirror were replaced or repaired by the dealer, you can't tell at all either.

26k is low milege if everything checked out it might be a winner

For both the rarity of these vehicles and the relative closeness of the subject in question... I'd drop the money on the gas to go see it in person and drive it. At the same time, take a buddy with you who has NO INTEREST in purchasing it, so you can get an unvarnished second opinion. I know if I was doing my own purchase a second time, a buddy might have helped save me some bucks by noticing that the vehicle needed tires and that the sales guy was promising things he had no intention of delivering.

Negotiation for buying a car is war. Bring more support than the other side, and make sure they give up more than you do. :D

That is a excelent suggestion. it is always in these days a good idea to get one or ask the dealer to show you one before you totally agree to write a check or put down cash.

Right, car fax, will always say weather it was a major or minor accident. Ask him for the receipt for the body work as well.

Wrong  Last weekend I went with my son to look at a 06 Jetta TDI. Carfax was clean but the car had damadge to the whole right side and nothing fit correctly from the right front fender to the right rear bumper. This car was at a respected local VW dealer and if it had not been a TDI I'm sure they would have taken it to auction.

Carfax is only a starting point! It has been said many times before

The seller was honest enough to say the car had been in an accident, so there is a good chance all is legit, and was put through the VIN on Car Fax. And I did suggest the receipt for the repair as well. OTOH, my son totaled my first and favorite TDI, we towed it out of the ditch, never reported the accident, and sold it for salvage. It still shows up as a good vehicle if you ran it on Car Fax today

Car-fax is something a retired car salesman made up. It is so easy to evade that type of report. I fixed two vehicles at a bodyshop with used body parts and paid cash. When I traded one they brought up the carfax report..... spotless. What a joke. Do not trust carfax 100%

Exactly... carfax doesn't show anything unless it was formally reported to an insurance company.

If the guy is legit, then he should have no problem having the vehicle inspected by the body/frame shop of your choosing (on your dollar, of course) then having the shop call you with their findings... if he's even the least bit hesitant about you getting it inspected, move on.

Actually there is more  I took my new to me 00 XJ to a Jeep dealer to have a remote key fob programmed and it showed up on CarFax that I had it serviced

True... but I was just talking about accidents. Insurance companies, DMV, and delaerships are generally the only ones who can tie information to a VIN. If none of those three were involved, it won't show up.

Right so you only get a accident history if a shop reports repairing damage whan an owner pays cash most won't, and only service history if a dealer did the service, if an indie shop or owner did it then it will not show in carfax. still I think it is a good starting point. Most accidents other than minor ones that are under ones insurance deductable are going to be claimed if the vehicle is covered, so that will be recorded. accidents under what most people's deductables of $500 to $1000 are normally not that major if that is all it costs to have it repaired.

Carfax did offer some kind of garanty as to the accuracy of their reports.
