Post subject: | New Ford 6.8L diesel |
I'm in Homestead FL for the race this weekend and Ford has a great display. They have a cut-away display of their all new diesel engine. It's entirely new and all Ford, not International. New turbo... The first thing I noticed is the new turbo design. Gone is the twin turbo setup on the previous engine. This new turbo looks to have TWO impeller/compressor housings on a common shaft with a single turbine. Looks like the turbine side might have some sort of variable vanes but I couldn't be sure. Cylinder heads... All aluminum, 4 valves per cylinder. No real suprises other than the intake valves are outboard and exhaust inboard. Intake manifold is integrated with the valve covers. Fuel rail, lines, injectors, and glow plugs are all accessible without having to remove the valve covers. Valve train... Very intricate looking. Cam in block. Each lifter actuates two pushrods. Stamped steel rockers appear to have some sort of lash adjusters. Could be some sort of variable valve timing, but not sure. Block... Solid cast iron block. No cylinder liners. No suprises there. ![]() Intercooler... Now this took me awhile to figure out. Its a liquid-to-air intercooler. Look like Ford did this to save space as the whole assembly fits behind the drivers headlamp. Good news is that its separate from the engine cooling system. Looks like it has its own dedicated radiator and I can only assume it has its own pump too. Exhaust... NO PARTICULATE FILTER! Yeah! But it does use a Urea tank. I must say that I was very impressed with the Ford rep. He was very knowledgeable and was able to answer most of my questions. Thats all I got for now. Feel free to add any more info if you got any. |

I have always loved Ford and Dodge pick-ups, especially the diesels. I just wish that Ford would offer a manual transmission with their diesel. |

The new ford 6.7L will have a DPF. Any diesel vehicle sold has to have one, thank you EPA. I believe the output rating should be like 390hp/720lb-ft. The turbo is a single turbine/twin-compressor stage turbo with a variable geometry turbine stage. I think I read somewhere that it was sliding nozzle but I'm not sure. I have a friend who works at Ford on this engine program. It's a pretty phenomenal engine. |

so when are they putting something like this into the their 150 series or their ranger series.. a 6.8L is HUGH!!! the Cummins 5.9 is big in a 2500/250 series truck. sure its been up to a 6.7liter but why??I know I don't know..but it'll never be seen in a 1500 or 150 series truck..TOO BIG!!! don't get me wrong here..I don't even get why Cummins uped the 5.9 to a 6.7L? cannot get enough power out of a 5.9L diesel?BS!! so put and 8.3L in the 3500/350 series trucks..its just madness in the 2500/250 series trucks..is all that power needed? before you answer..I drive an old school witha DD 8.2L..190HP..JUST 190HP...I push(empty) more than most people (truck and tow)..every day. I'd like to 'qoute' you the torque of the DD8.2 but I would guess its less than 500FT/lbs..so just a little more than my 24v 5.9L Cummins....I know for driving something in the same weight as my bus the 8.3..has WAY more torque!! it pulls hill that must down shifts for! the vehicle that I drove with the 8.3L..an Alpine RV..empty weigth 24Klbs +-...6 speed Allison..yes it gain speed up the same hill that I have driven my bus( DD8.2L Turbo, Mt6430) at 50MPH..without down shifting/my bus has to down shift on the same hill..so I'll ask again why does a 2500/250 series truck need a 6.7/6.8L engine? so what does this have to do with a jeep?? ALL are TOO much for a liberty!! the 5.9, 6.7, 6.8 would kill the front end. way too much weight..power great weight NO. SO WHERE is the next 4 cylinder diesel ??? maybe a 3cylinder diesel? I think the Liberty would do well with a 2.0L diesel..if it wasn't used for towing so the new Ford diesel might be cool..but it'll neven be seen in something like a Liberty..TOO much engine -dkenny |

Kill Kenny!!! ![]() I don't think anyone was thinking about those pwoerplants in a jeep Liberty...now a furture Jeep Truck in the near future?...who knows. I wish Jeep (Fiat) would come out with a downsized truck with a 4.0L or smaller diesel...like about a 3.3L or so. |

Huh? My 99 F450 had a 6 speed manual. Ford is not offering manual transmissions on diesels any more? |

Yeah, I've really really been hoping someone would come out with a SMALL diesel pickup truck. 2.8L in the CRD was just barely enough to pull my 27' travel (think Danoid). A pickup truck with some wheelbase and perhaps a 3.5L engine or so would be the sweet spot for pulling prowess, utility and fuel economy. There was a rumor a year ago that Toyota was considering a 4.5L diesel in the Tundra, but I've heard nothing since. - Chris |

Mahindra is coming out with their 2.2-liter I-4 turbodiesel, which delivers around 150 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, 5000lb. towing capacity, 2,765lb. carrying capacity and get 30 mpg. It will be available in Feb. |

I hope that this engine does well for ford, but I have my doubts. It is very complicated. And it's still a light duty engine. Kenny: The reason Cummnins went to 6.7 litre is that with these new epa'd up engines produce less hp per cc of displacement. To keep up with the hp wars they need more size. Plus the B-series engine had evolved to 6.7 litres in just about all their other applications; med duty trucks, tractors, marine, etc. I'm sure it was cheaper to have one size "b-series" Why some much hp. Different market that medium heavy duty trucks. Pickups need to drive like cars and pull loads and not be slow and clumsy like buses, semis and delivery trucks. Consumer demand. AND, the duty cycle is so low compared to medium duty applications the engines can be tuned to really high hp. e There are a lot of consumers that would love a light duty smaller truck/suv with a diesel. But for right now it's not gonna happen. There are a lot of reason. Dodge is the closed as Cummins designed a smaller v6 and v8 for their 1/2 tons and smaller suvs. They was a contract for a 2010 1500 diesel but....well, you know. They even built a plant to product the engine. It is still talked about but not for several years if at all. |

Cummins will have a diesel for the 1/4 ton truck, but it was delayed due to the economy. I'd say we'll see one for 2011. |

I think they need a larger engine bay ![]() Nahhhhh....your friendly FoMoCo dealer will just take the entire cab off the truck for your warranty work. Let's see.......... 7.3L....tried and true for years. 6.0L....either you got a good one or a bad one. If you got a dud one, it fell into the same pile as the ones that were under one of 72+ TSB's. 6.4L......shortest run production diesel known to man. 6.7L.....we'll see. Hopefully FoMoCo's pisssing contest with Navistar won't come back to haunt them. Greg |
