Post subject:  CAC TO EGR HOSE...BURST

Well at 74,000+ miles my driver's side CAC hose split 4" while on the highway. No power but plenty of black smoke so I knew it wasn't a fuel delivery problem. Found a hose at a local dealer and replace in 10 minutes. Knew what to check and what was suspect due to the many post in this section...Thanx!

Happy to help! It would seem like the 70k mark is about the lifespan of the factory hoses, as I'm at 72k and just discovered that I had the same hose go. I only figured it out a couple weeks ago, but I think it was go-ing for several months before I really poked at it.

I'll post up a pic of my solution, which might be helpful for anyone with an Industrial Hose retailer nearby... Saves MUCH money over the dealer's bad hoses! :D

I was checking mine out when I installed the provent. my intercooler to intake hose looks good and the turbo to intercooler hose looks good at first look too. but it has a film of oil all over the underside. I felt all around it but I can't find any holes or splits. I can't help but think that's not good and it will fail soon.

Oil on the outside of the hoses? Yep... You probably have a split somewhere. I couldn't find mine until I pulled the hose out, and it looked like I had pulled a razorblade along the inside 'liner' of the CAC-to-intake hose. The cut was perfectly straight and smooth... But the outside split had the rope webbing poking out. Obviously the oil had been attacking it for quite some time.

I had oil on the outside of that hose for a VERY long time, possibly an indication of oil weeping through the rubber as it degraded. Kinda like a pair of Nitrile or Latex gloves will expand and get porous with any contact with diesel fuel.

The thin layer of oil film on the outside of the tubes is a "hint" of what is going on inside the tubes. The film is engine oil/dieselfuel and seems to destroy the tube from the inside out which makes sense. I was going to do some stainless tubing for both with silicone ends in the spring. I hope the top hose makes it another 5-6K.

The kool part is with the info here I knew that it was not air in the fuel...or the dreaded limp mode...or EGR valve. When I went to the dealer to get the hose, the service manager wanted to "hook me up" with an OBDII scan to see the code...of course it was not free...$85.00. I told him that I was 99% sure it was the CAC to Engine Block intercooler hose and did not need the "Scan" or "Inspection". I got the tube and replaced it with the tools I had in my Jeep...about 10 minutes...and drove off from the Parts Parking Lot. Very Satisfying!!!

I will have to keep checking mine for farther damage from oil. I don't think I have lost a noticeable amount of boost. When I find a hole or notice loss of boost I guess I will have to get a replacement. The good thing is I have a provent now so the CCV is not dumping any oil there now.

When it finally splits, you will definitely know it.
