if, in fact, the dipstick is touching the bottom of the pan, couldn't you just grind off a small amount of the dipstick ? Say, in 1/4 inch intervals, until it no longer touches ?

With the dipstick touching the bottom of the pan, how far off is the fluid level compared to the correct level?

It is not off at all. That is the problem. The correct level is obtained when the dipstick touches the bottom of the pan. Since the dipsticks are a little too long, they bow and act like a spring. But they still read the same level. Because they don't go any further in - they can't. There is a pan in the way. So there are 2 solutions.

1. Extend the filler tube just enough for the dipstick to touch the bottom of the pan, but not act like a spring. That is what the adapter I made does.

2. Grind off a little from the end of the dipstick. Wait, brain fart... :dizzy: That won't work. It will lower the fill line on the dipstick when it bottoms out. So it will show full when it is actually low. So scratch that idea.

So there is only one solution...

Owning 2 of them, it is diesel vibration. I pinched the tube out of round with channel locks, problem solved on both or them.

You are going to grind off the lower bottom of the indicator. The only way is to shorten it at the yellow handle end.

I thought this earlier, but was sure I must have been missing something as nobody else caught it...

In 1973, I met up with a group of friends in Moab to visit Elephant Hill in Canyonlands National Park. We all (6 of us if I remember correctly) jumped into my 1970 Toyota Landcruiser shorty and made it easily over the Hill. After a day or so on the other side, we started to head back and I checked my oil only to find I couldn't see any on the dipstick.

For whatever reason, I didn't have any oil with me. Fortunately, we still had enough beer left that after a few minutes of panic, my friends came up with the explanation that my dipstick was too short.

As a current CRD owner, it's nice to know my dipstick is now too long!!

What's interesting is that I've had two CRDs and neither had this problem. Why would some have this problem and some don't? Did Chrysler get a bad batch of dipsticks from the supplier maybe?

Mine popped out untill I took the engine cover off and hung it in the garage.

I thought that engine cover vibration was doing it.

??

Nope, my engine cover is in my trailer, has been since I got the CRD. My dipstick pops out constantly. I put a small bend into the top of the stick to make it press against the inside of the tube... Bugger still vibrates out sometimes. I'm going to look into shortening it at the top, but I probably will just end up pinching the tube like flman did.

You guys are the best! My tranny dipstick used to fit snug until recently when I noticed it coming out.. I just had the tranny fluid and filters changed on my 2006 CRD Limited 4X4 and noticed that the dipstick is coming out six inches or so just after driving it a few minutes.. What is the best fix as I read every post above from pinching the tube to adding the adapter!

Worm clamp and small piece of double sided velcro. Worm clamp velcro to tube just below top and wrap velcro around "handle" of dipstick. Works great costs like $1.50 or less if you have the items on hand. Not my idea, came from another post on the forum that I'm to lazy to look for.

i think it is vibration in the 06 imho. mine shook so much the tube broke just above the bracket that attaches it to the tranny next to the firewall.

Had the same problem so I use to keep my tranny dipstick in the garage 8)
Don't need it that much so I simply put a plastic cap on the tube. Could have used a cork as well

my 06 pops up as well. I just got a little short mini bungee cord and it hooks into the heater hose clamp through the dipstick and back into itself. Not a lot of pressure just enough to hold it in place.

I dont know if it is because I just joined the forum, or because this is such an old thread, but I don't see an option to dm you. I'd like to buy a dipstick extention adaptor from you if you are still willing to make one.
