Post subject:  Transmission fluid dip stick
I noticed on at least 2 occasions recently that my tranny dipstick was not fully seated and was actually several inches above the the tube leaving a gap for dirt and moisture to get in. Not sure if vibration is the cause but that is the only thing I can think of. Anybody else experinece this and what is the fix?

Same thing with me!
Turn that stick 180 degrees over and put a couple of non radical "bends' in it.

It fixed mine!!

Oh good. It was not just me. I have an 07 gasser. They didn't even come with a tranny dip stick. So I ordered one for an 06 from the dealer. Installed it no prob, but it kept popping out. As some of you may know, I have access to a rapid prototyping 3D Printer. So I modeled up a little extension for the transmission tube and made one that fits perfect right into the tube. I will take a pic tomorrow and post it.

Hose clamp, did the zip tie thing, got old. Just tight enough to slip it on and off.

Don't bend it?

How about finding the cause of the problem 1st.The trans is getting over pressurized somehow.Check the trans breather to make sure it is not partially plugged.

I don't know about all of the loose dipsticks but mine is not pressure related. I have watched it itself shake loose when the engine is very cold and runs rough. For me flipping the stick around backwards fixed the problem.

I did try to find the problem on mine. The dipstick actually bottoms out on the tranny pan. Then it "bows" the dipstick when you press the dipstick all the way into the tube. Initially, the slip fit of the dipstick into the tube will hold it in place, but over time, the bow acts like a spring and pushes it out. So I built this little screw-in extension that is the perfect length and allows the dipstick to go just deep enough until it touches the tranny pan without bowing the dipstick.

Your issue was your KJ did not come with a dipstick from the factory,you made a tube that was to short for the dipstick and you will get false readings.

Not Really. I did the research before I got the dipstick. I did not replace the tube on my 07. I checked the parts list for both 06 and 07. The 06 and the 07 use the same Fill tube, tranny, and pan. Part numbers are the same between the models. 07 just came with a plastic cap. 06 came with the dipstick. So I don't see where I would be getting the wrong level on the dipstick. In addition, I stopped at the dealer and had them check the level with the "special" dipstick. Then I checked it with my 06 dipstick. Both showed the same level.

Thanks for all the feedback; at least I'm not alone. when I get back from SLC, I'm gonna flip mine around to see if it fixes the problem.

I've flipped, rotated and even crimped mine to no avail. I agree with Joe, I doubt that it is pressure in the tranny, its even done it at idle. If Long tall texan (LTT) could create those locking extension for a couple of bucks, I would be interested in buying one. It may even be in the CRD owner's best interest to do a group buy so that LTT has a good idea of how many to reproduce. Since one does not check the Transmission fluid level that much (at least it is not something I fuss over), it seems to me that this could be removed and reset every 30k if one chooses to do so.

Any takers? LTT, what do you think? Do you have the ability to receive Pay_Pal money?

I can make them any time. Cost is the same regardless of quantity. Costs about $12 in materials, and about $3 to ship in the US. So, yes, just PM me if anyone wants one, and I'll give you my PayPal address so you can send me $15.

LTT - if your adder is at the top of the tube aren't you changing the measurement?

Nope. The basic problem is that the OEM dipstick is bottoming out on the pan. Then the dipstick is bowing. I just added a little length so that the dipstick just bottoms out, and does not bow. Therefore, it does not spring itself out.... I double checked it with the dealer, as have 2 others that I have sold them to.

The OEM dipstick DOES bottom out on the pan. I've had the pan off of both of my CRDs and you could see the scratch where it rests.
