Post subject: | BD X-monitor in jeep liberty |
I picked up a BD x-monitor NEW in the box off ebay for $90. I had to tweak a few things to make it work in the Jeep Liberty. The monitor was for a 99 Dodge Ram pickup with the cummins. But the concept is the same. First off open the hood and bask in the plastic clad CRD glory. ![]() Next pull the heat shield off the exhaust manifold. ![]() That opens up a good view to the manifold. ![]() Since it's a 1/4" NPT tap for the EGT probe, you use a 7/16" drill bit. I start the hole slightly. Not trying to get into the manifold. But enough to hold the drill in place. ![]() Once you're to that point grease up the drill bit. This helps catch any chips. ![]() I like to start the engine and allow the backpressure to push any chips out the hole. See why it's a good idea to use the grease? ![]() And now it's through. ![]() Next it's tapping time. Again, grease is your friend. ![]() It's kinda of a pain to get to, so I used a socket and extension to reach down in there. ![]() More crud caught by the grease. ![]() I used a magnet I stole from the kids to fish the remaining chips out of the hole. ![]() I did run into a problem with the probe depth. So I used the included bung (for post turbo mounting) and hacked up a steel close 1/4" npt nipple to make a spacer. ![]() I forgot to take a pic of the probe installed. But here's a pic of the heat shield. I cut a hole to allow it to be reinstalled. ![]() Since I'm in here, I decided to plug off the EGR valve. I used a fender washer and bolt. I tack welded the bolt as well. I sandwiched this between the EGR pipe and the EGR valve assembly. ![]() The X monitor needs 12V switched power. So I fiddled around inside the PDU until I found a switched lead. ![]() Buttoned everything back up so only the lead comes out. ![]() I ran the wiring to the display and to the EGT probe. I looped everything so it'd be covered under the plastic engine cover as well. ![]() I ended up velcro'ing the x-monitor controller to the ECM. ![]() Now for the part I REALLY didn't like. Boost. There's no port on the engine to allow easy tapping. However, there was a metric bolt boss that was the same thread as the boost bolt meant for the cummins engine. I ended up using several things to do this. I started a pilot hole again. Then setup a vacuum to catch chips coming out. I greased up the bit as well. But the thing that helped the most was having the Wife powerbrake the engine to build boost. Once I got into the engine I was greeted by a face full of grease and aluminum chips. That didn't bother me though. Better on me than into the intake! I did have to add a 1/8" npt 90* elbow so I could point the tubing to the right direction. ![]() Then reinstall the cover. ![]() The gauge is very simple and nice. ![]() I still have to wire up the transmission temp sensor. But I'll have to do a little research on the voltage values for the internal temp sensor the transmission has to interface it. Finally got a single gauge that will do all three things I wanted to monitor in a small single package the wife doesn't mind. The liberty's EGTs are low I think I maxed out at 900F lugging it around. Boost got up to 25psi. I like it. ![]() |

Excellent write-up. Could you explain a little more about how you sandwiched the bolt between the EGR pipe and the EGR valve assembly? Thanks. |

Just took the EGR crossover tube loose from the engine then as I reinstalled it. I put the washer/bolt in the side near the EGR valve itself. If you unbolt the fuel filter assembly from the firewall. (Don't disconnect the hoses) You can see down to the EGR valve. |

How did you mount the display? Can you use a separate temp sensor for the trans temp? Or are you trying to get the temp value from the TCM? |

Can you use a separate temp sensor for the trans temp? Or are you trying to get the temp value from the TCM? It's mounted on the dash right next to the tweeter at the base of the A pilar. BD does sell a kit to install a separate temp sensor for manual trucks. I haven't priced it though. I need to find out what the voltage value is from the jeep. It's pin 23 on the valve body connector. I kinda hope it's nothing more than the higher voltage values pre and post 99 dodge rams had. If so, it'll only be a matter of finding a resistor value to calibrate the temp. |

How readable is it in bright sunlight in the location you selected? Also, please let us know about the possibilityof using an electronic temp sender. Thanks, DOC |

Thanks, DOC Plenty. The brightness is also adjustable. The monitor also can alarm at set points. |

![]() It's actually Andrew. (user name is first two initials and last name.) If you wanna drive from Washington to Georgia, I'd be more than happy to install it for you. ![]() I spy an interesting vehicle in your sig. I've got a VW diesel samurai with a "kicker" dual t-case setup and SOA on YJ springs. ![]() |
