Ok guys and gals,

My mysterious noise is my rear diff. Back in September I started getting a clunck when shifting into reverse. Turns out one of the spider gears has some wear around the pin and has extra slop therefore creating more backlash.

The mechanic that did a ride along with me today said that for some reason when turning right it most load up that spider gear causing the noise. I have 157K miles. Has anyone else had spider gear issues with their CRD's?

Instead of replacing the guts of the diff with Mopar parts I was thinking about putting in the Powertrax no-slip traction system guts. Does anyone have any experience with this unit? Will it work on our CRDs?

Skip those lunchbox style lockers, more problems then anything. You want popping and banging noises,go ahead and install one.A Detroit True Trac or the Detroit Locker are full carrier replacements(no more spider gears) and are both better and stronger.Granted they need professional install and a master install kit but a good gear guy can knock it out in a few hours.

Either go stock or get a selectable locker like an ARB. I had an aussie locker (again, no spiders) and blew it up in 1400 miles............

Save your self some time/money/and hassle.....

DTT would be the easiest and would be stronger than the stock spider setup. It is a quality Limited Slip (Gear Driven instead of clutch pack).

Next choice (a bunch more $$$) would be the ARB...also stronger but more complicated.

I have the Powertrax No-slip in a 4x2 pickup. It works great and I have had no problems. However, you will lock the wheels everytime you step on it. It can (and will) cause chirping around tight corners. I have learned to be easy on the pedal when making sharp turns.

Personally, I would either go with the stock replacement or a more advanced locker in a Jeep.

One more thing does anyone know the best place to buy a DTT from? Lowest price?

tjkj2002,

Will the DTT work with the ESP system on my 06? One of the sites I found said it might not be compatible.

It will work just fine,it will actually lesson the bad effects of the ESP.JL Rockies has one in his '06,granted it is the front though.

thanks for the info tjkj. I just found a site that has the 8.25 29 spline. Now I get to call shops to see what the install cost will be.

I've got the same clunck in my 00 XJ with 149K on it. I've been told our differentials are can be a problem

CRDs?

That is one of the higher mileage CRDs I have heard of. Anything else to note about your CRD? How did you do the 100K belt service? Replaced anything like the water pump? I have 65K on my 06 band I drive it a lot so you must be on the road a lot for 157K miles. Regular oil and fuel filter changes? Lift pump? How is your transmission holding up? Do you off road or tow?

yakers,

I do 10K-12K mile oil changes. I use Schaeffers Supreme 9000 full synthetic 5W40 diesel engine oil. I have had to replace the TC at about 70K. Replaced with a suncoast TC. I had the stealership replace the timing belt and water pump at just over 100K. I also had my drivers side boost hose go right around the same time as the TC.

Of course you are aware of the diff issue because of this thread.

Now at 158K I have two codes a P0671 and P0674 cyl 1 and cyl 4 glow plug circuit. Getting that taken care of by the stealership on Monday.

I installed a provent shortly before I lost my boost hose but now at 158K I haven't had any issues with the Mopar replacements (so far).

I also have to replace something in the rear door since the glass keeps popping open all on its own whenever the doors aren't locked.

Other than that the CRD has been great. Hoping to put 300K on it before I even think about getting another car/truck.

I have used multiple "lunchbox" lockers in Jeeps and full size trucks with zero issues whatsoever. They are very dependable, easy to install, and easy to remove if you want to go stock again. The Powertraxx No-Slip is by far the best one on the market. You can't even hear it operate. My Aussie Locker works great but it's loud in corners. I'd run one of these before I run the stock limited slip stuff any day of the week.

I thought the Chrysler 8.25 rear end was strong. My new-to-me CRD however, has a clunk going on in the rear end when I stop at red lights or take off from them. I assume it's the U-joint...but if you guys are having trouble with the diff. then that could be it I guess.
