 Post subject: Checklist for a 100k+ Used CRD?

I was looking at a used 2006 CRD with 117k miles on it.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for:
A. things to check before purchase
B. things to replace to increase the durabilty/reliability after purchase

I've spent a lot of time reading on the Lib-CRD. Some things I've figured out. Some things I still have no clue on. Like what the heck a diablo extreme puck actually does? Anyway, I've been looking for one, pickings are slim, and the mileage on this one worries me.

Things to check:

Does it have a Provent or a similiar oil recovery device?
How old are the turbo hoses? At that age they have probably been changed once, hopefully to Samcos.
Are there any signs of oil leaks around the front or back of the engine?
Any regular knocking sounds, or clicking from the front pulleys and idlers?
Has the timing belt been changed? This one is very important as its an expensive service.
When was the fuel filter last changed?
How often is the MAP (or boost control sensor) cleaned?

Take it for a test drive, and listne for knocks, clicks, tyre rubbing, etc:
Does it have a lift? If so check the CVs for clicking, boot cracks, etc
Have the bushes been changed in the sway bar, control arms, rear axle arm, etc?
Have the ball joints been replaced?

I'm sure there's more but that's a good start.

No. Wow. No.

Basically there are 3 for sale within an hours drive of my home.
2005/50k miles for 15k
2006/75k miles for 14k
2006/117k miles for 11k

So I was looking at getting the high mileage one since I can drop the other 4k into tinkering/tires/etc.

An easy determiner is, What kind of wheeling are you planning on doing?

05's did not come with traction control, so they are a little more "trail-ready." 06's came with standard traction control, but some were a little less buggy.

If wheeling doesn't matter to you, look at the build dates on the 06'es. (it is on a tag on the latch area of the driver's door) I would look for a 12/2005 or later build date.

But overall, I would personally be sorely tempted by the lower miles. A lot of damage can be done in 67K miles if the previous owner didn't take good care of the proper oil, filters, etc. You may save more in the long run by paying more up front for lower miles.

And you may accidentally buy a non-F37 05 CRD. . . . :pepper:

Also...if that 05 is a one-owner, that means it's still under factory powertrain warranty. And that might possibly end up saving you hundreds or thousands of dollars if something goes terribly wrong.

That is only true ****IF**** you can get Chrysler to transfer the warranty to you... AND ****IF**** they even choose to honor it later down the road.

I have hardcopy documentation of the warranty being on my vehicle and in my name from their own system... And I still got shafted by them because their almighty computer belched one day and my record was reset. They were unwilling to explain how this could have happened, but were more interested in yelling at me and a service writer on the phone demanding to know how I had obtained a hardcopy of "confidential" information about my own truck.

Chrysler is NOT TO BE TRUSTED. Any warranty is only as good as the company that stands behind it, and for Chrysler that won't even put in writing what the powertrain warranty ACTUALLY COVERS... That says a lot about how much they intend to stand behind their warranty.

IMO, spend the extra $4k and go for the lower miles... 67k miles in a poorly maintained CRD could equal WAY more than $4k worth of damage.

Assuming I can find a 2005 and a 2006 at about the same mileage, are the changes in the 2006 model important enough to make a decision based on year?

2005 = 7/70 powertrain warranty

2006 - 3/36 warranty unless extended was purchased. TC/Stability control

My father has an '05, I have an '06. IMO, I like the way the '06 drives a little more... but then again that could be the couple extra mods I have done.

There is some belief that '05s get slightly better mileage, on top of what Trav1s said.

One thing to consider is what kind of off-roading you may want to do. 05's do not have Electronic Stability, so they lend themselves a little better to the serious off-roader. Starting in 11/2005, CRD's were assembled at the factory with a modified torque converter that, coupled with F37, solved some of the torque converter problems experienced by earlier build-date KJ's.

If I was shopping for another KJ CRD, I would be looking for a 2006 Limited built after 11/2005 with less than 50,000 miles, and I would drive to go get it - especially at a good price.

Correction: Every time I try to warn people about this potential problem with a manufacturer warranty, you refute me as if you have any actual idea of the situation beyond what I have posted here. I have answered people's questions, including yours. Obviously you have forgotten my replies to your previous accusations.

I do not "know" anything about how many owners my CRD has had. I only "know" what I was told by the selling dealer, who supposedly was the original selling dealer as well, b/c they got the CRD back from the guy they sold it to when his needs changed. I have told you this before.

I should think that information is more than most people would have about any used vehicle they were buying. I did my own investigation before purchasing by getting the VIP reports from Chrysler's own system. The owner name was listed as the guy who became the name in the "previous owner" box after they updated the system with my name as owner. Was there a name in the "previous owner" box before? No. I have told you this before also.

So how is it that one person moving from "current" to "previous" owner becomes two people then? It is impossible, but it isn't important. For a solid YEAR, FAR longer than the 30 days that would be a typical period to correct an error like this, the VIP reports printed out showed my name as owner, and an active 7/70 with both time and mileage remaining. 15 months after purchasing the vehicle, that information changed and where the 7/70 had been, it now listed a 3/36 that was expired. This does not imply anything about number of owners, however you previously made the connection in your own mind that it did. So obviously, I have told you this before as well.

This is all within Chrysler's own system, so unless you are the very unpleasant corporate person that spent an hour berating a dealership employee who was trying to find out why this had changed, kindly STFU. You do not "know" anything about this situation. Only the corporate level can update any of those fields, the dealers cannot. What happened was a bad-faith move by a corporation for the sheer intent of saving themselves money on a vehicle that they would have needed to support, except for removing this warranty without cause.

This was enough of a fraudulent move that only Chrysler's ensuing bankruptcy and that judge in NY dismissing any previous claims against the company (when it became Chrysler-Fiat) that stopped my own legal claim against them. I had numerous dealer employees from SEVERAL dealerships in wide-ranging areas that all agreed unanimously that the information I have was correct: I had the warranty, and it was removed fraudulently. But again, I have told you this before.

Feel free to search and see if my story has ever been different. It hasn't.
