Drove out to KC last week and confirmed my thermostat is bad (wife told me it was running cold). The temperature never went higher than 3/8 on the gauge despite blocking the radiator.

It seems this part is on a national back-order. Mopar Parts America has set a ship date of 2/28 but it could be longer. Argh! Any options?

Available on German Ebay for Euro 135, but seller only list EU as shipping destination.
DHL small package costs around Euro 14. A rebate of sales tax is possible.
Expensive bugger.

I had to replace mine as well, after I took off the old unit it looked to me like it might be possible do some machine work and install a new thermo stat.

It would be some work, but you could use a generic commonly available unit.

self contained unit, bolts to the block and has several pipes coming off of it. I used to have pics, but I'm pretty sure they are lost, and the old thermostat is hiding in the garage somewhere.

My temp gauge never gets above 3/8th even when the grill is blocked off.

More efficiency results in less waste heat available for the heater :D

It looks like the elbow part is seperate and where they put in the thermostat :D I have a saying and that is "if a man put it together a man can take it apart" `

What coolant temperature does that translate to? I don't believe the engine is going to operate very well with the coolant below 150F. You lose compression and some efficiency. I lost 4 mpg on my road trip. At 70-75 mph, we got 23 mpg. That same trip last year we got 27.

I'd buy that off you to see if I can retrofit a standard thermostat into it. I can't take the time to destroy the one in my Jeep, my wife drives that every day.

Ya and I wouldn't mind selling it to you, problem is, I don't know where it went, its hiding somewhere in the garage, and I'm not sure I would be able to find it.

x2. My father asked me to drive his Jeep on a road trip earlier this week. Doing 60mph on state highways, I only managed to get 29.7mpg (his Jeep has all my mods, except the muffler). That same trip, in my Jeep, would net closer to 34-35mpg. It was only on the way back that I noticed his temp gauge was at 3/8 instead of 7/16, so I told him that the thermostat may have kicked the bucket... The entire drive, in hindsight, felt as if the Jeep was still 'cold'. Accelerations were sluggish and it required more go pedal than normal to maintain cruising speed.

Post subject:  Re: Thermostats not currently available

I just changed my tstat 3 days ago.

Moparpartsamerica took about a 2 months to get the part along with a fuel filter and a gasket, and some sunroof parts.

There is alot of stuff going on in that area, a lot of hoses to leak, a lot of potential badness. The gasket was difficult to scrape off of the block due to the small area around it, otherwise it's just hose removal.

My temp new used to sit at 12 o'clock no matter what, it had been sticking in the 30 to 40% range, now it's always at 50% again. I had replaced my fan clutch and flushed the coolant, cleaned the radiator fins of dirt etc, last summer i pegged the coolant gauge one tick below H and figured i'd replace all the major parts, before i went in to the dealer for the recalibration, as i am afraid of them. I still have not done it, hoping it is a fixed problem.

I boil tested both the new and old tstat and the old one was leaking/opening at 155f or so, the new one at around 172-175 Old was closing at around 140 new was closing at around 160-165. Without any pressure or flow aganst it there's no telling the open and close temps but i figure these are close to actual. The thermostats have a casting mark of Behr, made in Italy, possably we can get them from elsewhere.

There's probably not enough demand for them to be made by another manufacturer. They probably cost about the same from an Italian spares dealer as from Moparpartsamerica.

Mine never gets warm either... as of a few weeks ago :( It used to sit right in the middle, but now it is around 1/4-1/3.
