Has anyone ever seen a CRD KJ with no factory ABS?

I am doing some research for a TJ conversion.

As I understand it, the KJ will lose the speedometer and cruise control if you disconnect the ABS computer. Looking in the FSM for the 2005 KJ it mentions that the Body Control Module has the ability to generate the speed signal for the PCI network in KJs that didn't come factory optioned with ABS. It looks like they use only the rear axle tone ring to generate this signal on non ABS KJs.

The 2005 parts fische only lists one part number for the Body Control Module so it would seem that all should have the ability to generate the signal once the wiring was connected. It may be an option that would have to be selected with the dealer scan tool?

All North American KJ CRD's came with ABS.
05's had 2 wheel sensors and rear diff sensor.
I think 06's had 4 wheel sensors since they have traction control.

For the '06 and '07 KJ's the rear uses 2 separate ABS sensors, one on each rear wheel. The hole for the speed sensor on the pumpkin is filled in and no tone ring in the diff. You would also have to get a '05 or older rear diff along with the BCM to make it work.

This would be a 2005 CRD motor transplanted into a 2005 TJ ( unlimited model )

Does anyone know the rear diff tone ring pulse count?

I would like to use one TJ front wheel ABS sensor to provide the signal to the BCM for the speed signal ( providing a speedometer and cruise control ). The downside of doing it this way is that the tone signal will most likely not match exactly so the tire/speed factor in the BCM would need to be adjusted to compensate. I think that this can be done with a DRBIII tool. The other downside is that since its a front wheel the speedometer will not react to a spinning rear end. It will always read the front wheel speed. Everything should work fine, but it would be a little odd?

You can try what I did as long as you do not use the KJ t-case,it works great.

For the KJ CRD, the vehicle speed for the ECU is received by CAN. On KJ, the only modules that were CAN capable were the ECU, ABS module, and the Gatekeeper which translated CAN messages into J1850 or KWP2000 for usage by other modules in the vehicle. The reason why it is CAN between the ABS and ECU is due to the messaging speed required by ESP.

In order to use a KJ engine in a TJ, it would be mandatory to have the Gatekeeper from the KJ installed so as to maintain functionality for:
*Oil pressure (sensor is connected to gatekeeper)
*AC Head pressure (connected to gatekeeper)
*Wake-up for the alternator field control
*Translate vehicle speed sent by ABS on CAN to J1850 for receipt by cluster, TCM, etc.

Additionally, the KJ has SKIM/Immobilizer for the ECU whereas TJ doesn't. As such, it will be necessary to bring over also the KJ Wireless module and key that matches the VIN in the ECU the parts were donated from.

To be honest, the only time I've seen the KJ powertrain work in a TJ is when the entire KJ wiring harness from bumper-to-bumper was adapted into the TJ chassis, effectively having a KJ in the clothing of a TJ.

Hope this is able to help you.

It is in fact called the Gatekeeper, believe it or not...

Ok, but what is it?

When we last had this conversation.....which was a while ago, maybe a year. We were saying that the BCM would transmit the speed signal on the BUS.

So what is the gatekeeper? Is it part of the BCM(body control module)?

The Gatekeeper is a translator. Since the rest of the KJ works off of the J1850 communication architecture, it converts the CAN information coming from the ECU and sends it to the other modules. It also has some engine sensors attached to it and provides that information to the ECU via CAN.

ABS module and ECU communicate with each other via CAN since the messaging speed is required for ESP functionality. The ECU receives all of its necessary information from other modules via CAN, so without the Gatekeeper it won't work.

OK, but lets get back to the main point, VSS -> BCM -> ECU

So the vehicle speed sensor connects to the BCM, the BCM has the rev/mile calibration, and the BCM transmits the speed info on the BUS(PCI J8150 in this case). Correct?

For 2005+ KJ diesel, the path of information should be:

Vehicle Speed Sensors ------> ABS --------> BCM -------> Gateway --------> Diesel ECU
3 (05), 4 (06) WIRE J1850 J1850 CAN

The wiring diagrams show the VSS connecting to the BCM in the cases where there is no ABS. Does every KJ BCM have the ability to broadcast the speed signal on the J1850 PCI bus?

So where is the gatekeeper? Or is it part of the ECU?

I myself have never seen an 05+ diesel KJ without ABS.

The gatekeeper is located at the left front of the engine compartment underneath the battery tray/fuse block I believe.
