Tooling along at 79mph right outside Grand Junction heading to Kanab UT. Been tooling along at 80-90 for 400 miles. First tank of diesel netted 23.5mpg. Not bad for driving over the Rockies at 85mph. Hopefully mileage improves on the flatland at lower speeds.

Ok I stopped for the night at rabbit valley. COLD! 10f. Bundled up in the back of the jeep with the dogs. Furry little heaters!(that tend to drool and slobber on me)

I'm hoping it doesn't get too cold tonight and I cannot start the jeep in the morning. I'm about a mile from the interstate in the boonies.

Well, it was cold, but I was alright. Took three tries before the jeep caught which was slighty unnerving, got it idlring with the heater on now.

Sam, pretty good milage for that kind of speed. I have Goodyear AT/KOs and that costs something in tire weight and strong sidewall. When I drive with a big pod I am lucky to get 20 MPG at anything over 65. Now at slower speeds (55) I have read some 30+MPGs but I don't want to drive that speed on long highway trips. When I had a long drive on a dirt road I was in 3rd (OD off) and went mostly 35 to 45 and hit 30 MPG then but the Liberty is a bit of a brick as it climbs in speed

Is there something you do to get that mileage at that speed?

What I failed to mention is that my mileage between grand junction and salina Ut dropped down to 17.8 mpg. However during that time I idled for at least an hour, was fighting a headwind, and driving about 80mph.

All of these figures were with the thule on top - the same model thule as the one we sold you.

One factor may be how your thule is mounted, if you recall(which its been awhile since you saw our CRD so I dont expect you to) we made our own mounting bars that sit very low, so low in fact that I use foam weatherstripping to keep them from rubbing on the roof panel.

If your roof bars go above the existing rails, and then have the thule sit on top of those, the difference in our mileage could be due to the added height of your thule.

I think the added height is probably what is hurting you, the the liberty I notice a drastic difference in mileage with and without the thule on top. However, when compared to the cherokee I hardly notice any difference at all with the thule.

One thule stays on the cherokee all the time, and another only gets put on the liberty when its needed.

Consider lowering your mounting bars and I suspect your mileage will improve with the thule on top.
