I'm still busy stripping my CRD down to the bone ...
The top of the engine is off ... looks like there's a problem with the first piston ... think it hit a bearing .....NOW ...
I've got two options ....
Option 1: Take the engine completely out, and then open up the bottom to inspect and repair whatever is broken..
Option 2: Just take the sump out to see the bearings from the bottom ...
I know if the crank got hurt, I'll have to take out the engine ANYWAY to get the crank out .... but for some reason it just sounds simpler to only take the sump out and first see what's wrong ...
I'm confused a bit about how the manual explains the procedure of taking the sump off .... Apparently I have to loosen the engine mountings, and lift the engine about an inch or two ....that's not a problem .... but before that, I have to disconnect the cradle assembly and the axle shaft from the axle or something??????
Maybe I must take photos from the bottom and then someone can explain to me WHAT I must loosen ???

The orientation of the center diff (which floats slightly in the IFS suspension cradle, but not much) is probably too close to the bottom of the pan to allow it to be dropped AND to clear all the components in the sump. You probably have to either disconnect/drop the center pumpkin and associated bits to get that clearance. I'm guessing if you're working on the bottom end, you'll want to pull the front drive-shaft anyway to give you room to work and disconnecting the suspension cradle isn't that big a deal to you.

The tricky part may be in the fact that the engine mounts are (I believe) attached/built into to the top edge of the IFS cradle, it forms the lateral bracing for the engine mounts.
