I had the libby at the dealer last week to have some glow plugs replaced, among other things. My wife picked it up Monday, and not even a mile down the road from the dealer the cel comes back on. She takes it back, they tell her the diesel tech has already left, and he will be off the next few days. He did not even offer to have on of the other techs to pull the codes, this really ticked me off, this is the dealer that we drive 30 miles further down the road because I "like" them better than the local one. I do not want my wife to break down on the side of the road. But anyway, I take it out for a drive that night and hear a wssshhhing sound, more smoke and a lack of power. Just like before when I burst a cac hose. Took it to autozone to pull the codes, turbo under boost and something to do with mass air flow. I did not even write them down thinking I already knew what the problem was. I drive it to work yesterday, and the cel was still on, but after I started it back up after stopping at the convenience store it was off but I still had the other symptoms. Well I pull off both of the hoses and neither were ruptured. What else could this be? Isn't there a third hose that goes from the air cleaner to the turbo? |

Are they mopar hoses? I assume you looked under the covers? |

Do you still have the EGR active on your truck? Another member has been describing something very similar; they apparently have a leak at the EGR pipe flange. Thread link here: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=49125 |

I pulled both hoses off and inspected them, they are both mopar the cac to engine hose is the new design. The turbo to cac hose has a small worn spot where it rubs against the sensor on the air box. Both held pressure when I blew into the and capped off the other end with my hand. Yes I did have a large black ring around my mouth. The egr is three or four months old and is active. |

Is the wastegate dropping all the boost?? |

You could have a broken EGR pipe flange. Pull the heat shield off (under the radiator overflow bottle), just three bolts to undo. Just move the shield aside and you can see the place where the EGR pipe joins the manifold. The weld on the pipe flange has been known to break allowing exhaust gases to escape the manifold. This gives the same symptoms as a burst hose. They manufacturered a bunch of faulty pipes (basically spot welds on the flange are failing). The new pipes have much better welding. Hope that helps. |

Well I was finally able to take a look at the Jeep today. The EGR pipe looked fine. The engine was cold, had not been started since Friday afternoon. While sitting still and the hood open, I pushed the go pedal a little, 2000 rpm or so, and a poof of black smoke comes up from the engine, on the drivers side in the area when the CAC hose comes back into the engine. I get the wife to come back out and I try it again while looking in that area, but it did not do it again. The hose clamp is tight, and the hose apears to be good. Any ideas? Thanks |

It did the same thing this morning. I was by myself so I could not see it that good, but looked like it the smoke was being blown under the brake plumbing and coming out next to the sheet metal. When I go to lunch I will have some one help and I will see if I can get a better location. |

The EGR pipe comes around the back of the engine and connects to the EGR valve and then the intake elbow. It sounds like it has ruptured there. |

Well I am not even going to worry about this anymore, it is going back to the dealer(extended warranty=best money I have ever spent). I bet they did not get everything back together when they replaced the #3 glow plug. |

Yep, that sounds like it. You have to remove some of that junk to get to the back plugs. |

Can anybody tell me the formal name/part number of this part. I have a loud whoosing sound whenver I pass on the diesel (not gas ![]() I'm ordering new AFCV and possibly EGR valves today and want to make sure I have all of the piecesd and parts needed to tackle the job. Thanks a bunch! Drew |

There are actually two pipes 5170765AA EGR PIPE Exhaust to EGR 5170787AA EGR PIPE EGR to intake For the EGR you might want to get the gasket also, 5142815AA GASKET, EGR Valve For the AFCV there is a gasket and o ring, 5142613AA GASKET INTAKE THROTT 5142806AA INTAKE THROTTLE O ring |

They feed into the vacuum actuator, which is just behind your airbox. (has the small filter on it) That unit actually controls the pitch of the vanes to reduce turbo lag, which is more noticeable in a wastegated turbo. |

Post subject: | Re: wsshhhh |
LibertyCRD, The silver part on top of the turbo is the actuator that controls the vane position of the turbo. It functions via a vacuum line that goes to the turbo vacuum control module, which is located just behind the airbox. With no vacuum the turbo vanes are full open providing minimal boost and with full vacuum the vanes are closed to direct maximum energy to the turbine impeller. |

I took it to the dealer yesterday, and they said I have a blow intake gasket. ![]() |

click23 wrote: I took it to the dealer yesterday, and they said I have a blow intake gasket. ![]() ?????? the intake is part of the head - there may be a gasket on the throttle valve side - but that would seem to be fairly simple. |

I took the libby to the shop Friday, and no more wsshhh now. When I was in a few weeks ago, I told them about the shuddering from the transmission. They told me that replacing the glow plug should fix it, which I did not quite believe. With the leaking intake, and the lack of power, I could not duplicate it until yesterday. The new glow plug did not help. After the local dealer decided to milk the warranty a bit the last time I was there, I decided to take it to the one that did the work over the last few weeks. Milking the warranty is one thing, but saying a new glow plug could fix transmission shudder and not even looking at the car when my wife brought it back(see the first post) so much worse. I think I am going back to the local guys, they replaced the torque converter when I had it in for the transmission drain TSB, I bet they replace it again for a shudder issue. |
