Ok, this is the first time we have actually checked our milage after buying the 06 CRD 2 weeks ago. We got 17.3 mpg. I was hoping for more (alot more) but it is what it is. This was daily driving in the mountains where I live and a couple of days back and forth to work in the snow and I was in and out of 4x4 over about 17 miles of driving on those days. That being said I would expect it to pick up a little in good weather and better conditions. I have rough tires on it right now as well. The jeep is totally unmodified as I can tell. What mpg do you guys get on average and what can I do to get better mpg's?

I filled up today and got 21. That's all short trip city driving mostly in 4 wheel full time due to the snow caused by our "global warming" :pepper:

Things every new diesel owner should know.

In cold climates they "winterize" the fuel so it does not congel and leave you at the side of the road :shock: They commonly use 30% kerosene for this and kero has less btu's per gallon.
Diesel engines don't run effeciently untill they are at operating temperature. In the winter diesels have trouble warming up due to the fact there are effecient.
Driving in snow, 4x4 and other things cut into fuel mileage.
Change your air filter at every oil change, it's from a gas model and diesels need more air.
Clean your MAP sensor.
Our rigs were not tuned to get good fuel mileage :dizzy: read up on the GDE tune.

Have you checked your tire pressure? on short trips these crd's will get lousy mileage, longer the trip the warmer the engine the better the mileage. The map sensor does need cleaning now and then, I have an '06 and don't get the mileage others report. Winter blend does bring down the mileage, also where you get your fuel will make a difference, try and get it at a station that has lots of turn over, as the previous post said change the air filter often. I don't notice much difference in mileage when in 4 high as 2 high, it's the stop and go, but then I have a heavy foot. There is several things to increase the mileage, check the post's there are a few things to do that will help. :CAMPING:

unplug the MAF in the tube comming off the air box. this is called the ORM mod. it disables the EGR and for me it got me a little more MPG. its does cause the CEL. I had mine unplugged a while then got tired of seeing the CEL so I plugged it back in, I Just uppluged it again today and in a trip of just 6 miles my average MPG reported by the little overhead computer went up .5

This shows where the MAP sensor is the the where the MAF sensor is for the ORM.

I, for one, have seen a slight decrease since winter came...

From 24-25 MPG (9.5l/100km) to 21 MPG (11.5/100km) in a 6-month span, I must say I was a bit concerned but then again, all factors related to winter driving taken into account, it's not that bad.

Besides, I do not apply any of the tricks & workarounds (MAP/MAF, ORM, CCV), nor do I have the GDE tune. I will eventually apply all of them when the warranty is over :wink: Until then, I do not wish to stare at a CEL 24/7, without knowing if a gremlin made his nest under my hood :goink:

I'll be removing and cleaning my MAP sensor this weekend. At 17.5 mpg I hope it is very dirty and I get much better mpg's when its clean. What is the risk of damaging it?

Don't bang on the little copper thing in the middle (that's the sensor). Everything else is just housing.

The things that kill mileage include: winter diesel fuel in climes north of central Texas; starting a cold engine (takes a quart of fuel just to start a cold one -- after it warms up, burns MUCH less fuel); short drives or drives that are not all 60 mph cruising.

It doesn't really take a quart to start, it only seems like it, as there is a fluid churner that helps heat up a cold engine by making it work extra hard until it gets warm.

I've had my 2005 for 100,000 miles now, and I get about 25 during the summer, and 22-23 in the winter. I've gotten just over 30 on a trip when conditions were just right, and I've gotten 10 while towing a full-sized 5,000 lb travel trailer into a 30 mph head wind. So your 17.5 is not that far off, considering winter fuel, snow and slow going, 4-wheeling in that snow, short drives, etc. Throw in unfamiliarity with how to drive a turbo diesel for best mileage, and you got it.
