Thanks for the reply. I didn't want to unplug it and have default to closed. Outside of the buzzing, it's been running fine. I don't even get "smoke" on hard acceleration anymore...amazing how much crap an EGR valve dumps in an engine. The shutdowns are a bit harsh, but not bad...could be the winter diesel. During the summer, shutdowns were pretty rough and the engine would shake for a second or more.

I blocked off my EGR a few weeks ago and now I have my FCV making a pretty horrendous buzzing sound while the engine is running and for about 10 seconds after shutdown. I suspect the little gears in the actuator have bit it. It was sticking in the open position earlier in the summer and was sticking this past week. It started the buzzing this past Friday. Can I simply unplug it? ...or will it default to a closed position? Our search feature on this forum is apparently defaulting to "OR" logic and doesn't appear to recognize "AND" logic anymore which makes it very difficult to conjure up past threads on any particular topic.

The valve is spring loaded to the open position. Unplug it and it should be open. Most seem to fail open. One member did report a closed failure, but the engine wouldn't run or smoked something awful. Pull the hose to check beyond a doubt if you are concerned.

Nope, thats the FCV causing the rough shutdowns, when its working correctly it will make those smoother, otherwise that last little shake is just kinda rough. Mine's been this way for 40k miles now, you can just leave it and itll be fine.

If you disconnect it the CEL comes on. You are right about what's wrong with it, the plastic gears break pretty easy.
