I am thinking of replacing the muffler on my 05 CRD with a straight pipe but I am looking for some input on how loud it will be in the Jeep without it. This is the nicest vehicle I've ever owned. My concern is that it might get annoying to listen to on a long trip on the highway if there is a resonence in the cabin. My wife drives a F-150 that I put a flowmaster muffler in place of the stocker and I love the sound of it. Just looking for some input before I cut the muffler off of the Jeep. Love the site everyone here rocks

I've had mine off for almost 2 years now (2.5 inch pipe), still have the CAT however. Its much quieter then you would think. I drive 100+ miles per day and have taken several trips with the CRD. Noise has never been a real issue. It is louder then before with a bit of a drone, but not by much.

In fact nobody would know there is no muffler unless you tell them.

I did this to my previous CRD and hated it. Sounded horrible, not to mention louder. Made the Jeep sound like a sick 4-cyl Pontiac. It's all stock for me now.

I have a straight-thru muffler on mine... It didn't make it any louder, but it does make it sound like it has a little more grunt :SOMBRERO: . I've never had any issue with cabin noise, etc.

I've really enjoyed my Magnaflow catback kit. Like the sound, and the turbo seems to spool quicker.

Crankworm, here is a link of some mods a CRD owner has done with some wav files of exhaust sounds in various configurations of mods. One is straight piped and one has the magnaflow.

http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/

Click on the "magnaflow exhaust mod" link in the above URL.

Yep, I love my Magnaflow 2 1/2" system. Nice rumble at idle and no resonance (which you can get with pipe alone), and big improvements in fuel economy.

X2. I noticed it being slightly (as in a db or 2) louder and with more low tone, but by no means unpleasant. Also, the improvement in performance and economy was by far the more noticeable change. BTW, at Highway speed with the engine warm, I can't even tell a difference.

I have nothing after the catalytic converter. It's louder in the cabin that way, and it coats the rear diff with soot, but I haven't gotten a pipe to route the gas and noise out from under the jeep yet.

Thanks for the input, I think I will try the straight pipe in place of the muffler. I just don't like the idea of spending $60-70 on a darn muffler. On a side note I had a person at work tell me I might want to check the oil because it sounded like I have a rod knocking! :ROTFL: I had to laugh and tell him its been doing that since it was new.

I went with a straight pipe a couple years back for ~30 bucks at my local mom and pop muffler shop. My wife never noticed a difference and she drives it every day. Inside the cabin the difference in sound is hardly noticeable, Outside you can hear it. More people ask if it is a diesel now, especially in the drive through. If you decide you don't like it, at least you aren't out much and you could put something back on.
