Post subject:  Tranny shudder... Characterization?
Gentlemen,

I know this subject has been discussed over & over again, but I'm just wondering about the correct characterization of this issue... What are the experienced/felt symptoms? Shudder is one thing, but how much of a shudder is too much?

My vehicle, under certain conditions (driving at steady 55-60 mph, climbing long or steep hills), will let that deep rumble be heard, with a low-frequency vibration. More annoying than anything else, but I can feel the pain the engine is having, similar to driving a manual at too slow a rate in relation to the selected speed (ex: 30 mph in 5th gear).

Question: Is it worth it to bring this to the attention of the dealer, showing the tech first-hand waht is experienced? would this translate into a possible TC swap? Mind you, I have already tried the Dr. Tranny shudder fix (2 tubes), but to no avail...

Since you are still in warranty, definitely take it to the dealer and re-create the issue on a drive. Every time shudder occurs the clutch disk is losing friction material and the problem will only get worse over time. After showing the issue to them, they should cover a TC replacement under warranty. However, now you will get the new Euro converter that will prevent future shudder issues. Good luck!

First look up the thread discribing how to determine if your CRD has been "F37"ed :frankie:
For the first 2 weeks I owned mine it was not "deflowered" and made a droning noise exactly as you discribed :dizzy: Very anoying :| That's the only good part about F37, it eliminated the droaning. But that's not the shudder as I understand what your saying.

That sounds like the normal diesel vibration and deep groan because at 55 mph the engine is only going about 1700 RPM and is lugging. In the old days they say that lugging is bad, but now days it is common. It would be smoother with a v-6 or v-8. :JEEPIN:

First, thanks for taking the time to reply :mrgreen:

I will definitily pay a visit to the dealer and show them through a quick test run. They may acknowledge this and I will get a new TC (unless Chrysler Canada blacklisted me, this warranty really cost them major $$$ in repairs to date). I'll wait for spring, since milder weather allow for a better evaluation, in regard to tranny operating temp...

2nd, I'll also do the test to determine if I'm "F37'd" :furious: I'm pretty sure it must be, with all the successive reprogramming that occured last fall, when the Jeep spent a whole 1.5 month at the dealer :roll:

It does feel more like droning, except when climbing a steep hill, where I can feel a bit more of a shuddering or vibration...

I am not F37'd and I get the same shudder climbing a steep hill in the low end of 5th gear. I can also get some if I slowly accelerate from 55-60mph. I wish my F37'd TCM would arrive so I can take my Jeep in for warranty work, and get the Euro-TC. I am afraid if I take it in now, my Jeep will loose its gonads.

Thats funny, my Eco tuned Jeep shuddered alot today under the same driving conditions the OP did. I threw in a tube of Dr. Tranny Shudder eliminator when I got home. My Hot tuned Jeep will not even shudder with that stuff, and that was easy to make shudder before the additive.

Update:

Yep, I'm F37'd :roll: Confirmed with the road test at 60mph. Once the 5th shift occurs at 63-64 mph it drops, from 1750 to 1600 with speed decrease (63mph to 55mph), then downshift to 4th gear with RPM back at 1900...

I'll first look toward a dealer test, to validate state of TC. I'm still debating with myself about what 's really going on (droning or shudder). I suppose an educated guess from a 2nd or 3rd party won't hurt.

No matter what happens, I will have the new TC (and Transgo and deep pan), then the tune. Planning on doing this late spring, early summer. This way, my mind will finally be at ease and I'll stop drooling about how great the GDE tune makes our lil' Libby run :BANANA:

If it feels like a pneumatic impact wrench removing a stuck outer CV Joint nut, you are having the dreaded issue of tranny shutter where the lock up clutch is slipping and grabbing in the torque converter.
If it feels like a massage vibrator with a weak battery, it can be the normal low rpm four cylinder throb and not an issue.
Another item that can fool you is a lousy concrete road with a bad pour job where the contractor paid the inspector under the table to look the other way or made a substantial political campaign contribution :twisted: :twisted:
Drive shaft vibration should also be ruled out, but again, a bad drive shaft shakes your tail bone and does not feel like a pneumatic impact wrench removing a stuck outer CV Joint nut.
