I think it was P0049... it said "fuel sysem leak detected - large leak"

Anyone know what might cause this? There is no visible leak anywhere so i thought you all might have some ideas. I'm pretty much a DIYer so if i can find out what to check i can do it myself.
Help!

Thanks.

Any other driveability symptoms? The high pressure pump may have sucked a big slug of air from the fuel filter head to trigger that code. Do you have a lift pump?

Yes, rough starts usually, rough idle "somtimes" it died once. New codes today also, I don't recall numbers but basically they said "MAP barometric presure" something or other and "#4cyl misfire". Starts slow so I had batt and alt tested and both tested good but batt showed to be only 54% charged. What's goin on here? It has 46k miles on it so I wouldn't expect any issues this early? Oil recently changed as well as all PM work.
Don't know about a lift pump, it's an 06 model so does that tell us anything?

Also I was running the ORM and the crank case vent to a bottle (forgot what that's called) but I undid the ORM but no change. Also been running red fuel...

Running rough and stumbling tends to be air in fuel - so first quick check would be to check the pump at the fuel head and see if there's air.

red fuel should burn the same - but depending on how it was stored it might not be as clean - so a filter change would also be high on a troubleshooting list.

The battery at 54% - does not sound good - it might be dying.

and I don't know what codes they would generate.

Filter was changed a month ago. Red fuel here is consummed pretty fast by the farmers so storage time is minimal. I'll look for an air leak maybe at the filter, it the fuel under pressure or vacume at filter?

Yes, the fuel is under vacuum at the filter. Air tends to accumulate there, so a lot of us have installed a lift pump before the filter, like should have been there from the factory. Problem solved.

Unplug the two plugs that go into the filter head and see if they're wet with fuel.

Stock is under vacuum - and the stock fuel head tends to start leaking at the heater plug (drivers side)

Also, it wouldn't hurt to borrow a known good battery to put in there just to eliminate some things. It's probably not causing the driveability problems, but a bad one may cause codes that throw you off the real track.

Thanks for all the advice. I do own 3 diesels and understand what air in the fuel will do. An air leak sounds probable at this point. What lift pump do you all recommend? I have a FASS on my PSD vegi oil system but it's not a real reliable pump.

Cummins - intank - cleanest install
(you could do an inline easier as a test - but the intank is what the Engineers planned and the bean counters cut)

Thanks for the link, that write up was great. I wonder if I need a new filter head if its leaking air?

Is the rim of the filter moist with fuel? The first time I changed my filter I could not get the bleed screw tight enough to seal. Fuel seeped out and air seeped in. I had the same problems you did. I think the last filter change you did made for some kind of slow leak. That's the most recent thing that changed in your fuel system.

That's what I'm thinking too. I will look at that very close tonight.

This is pointing to air in the fuel  There's only a lift pump if you or a previous owner put one in :frankie: A good number of us have been down that road. Some will tell you to fix the air leak but it's more of a design problem then anything else. Our fuel lines from the tank to the filter head are from a gasoline KJ and were made to be under pressure and not a vacuum. I suspect if the fuel head is not burned around the heater plug that if you replaced all the fuel lines it might take care of your problem for a while. Mine had air in the fuel symptoms from the day I bought it new in 06 and the dealer "could not duplicate" and did nothing. I don't have the patience to put up with their BS so I resolved it myself with a Dodge/Cummins lift pump 2 years ago.

I replaced my battery last weekend with another group 34 Red top (not a 34R) and it starts much better now. My vehicle was made 4 years ago this week so it's time

Problem solved, it was definately air because the filter was loose... DOH! I know it was tight after I changed it but I was able to give it a full turn with my hands.... Maybe over a full turn. The lift pump will come soon.

If you gave it a full turn, no wonder you were having a problem. It's a wonder fuel wasn't leaking everywhere.
