Yesterday the CRD was parked heading uphill. It had been setting overnight. When the transmission was put into 'D' and I accelerated, the car just coasted backwards. After a few seconds of warming with the brake on, it went forward. I noticed the CEL was illuminated. My Harbor Freight cheapo code reader, Launch CREADER, showed codes 0731 and 0876. Searching on this forum, it seems that the TSB 21-016-05 service needs to be done, with the improved Cooler Return Filter, 04799662, getting installed. This should be under the 7-70 Powertain Warranty, no? Replacing the main tranny filter will be on my dime, but the fluid and RTV should be covered under warranty for the TSB work. |

Made an appointment yesterday at a dealer. When I arrived I was informed that the appointment was tomorrow, but they said they could work on it since I was already there. The service manager was given the TSB. He said that there would be a $97 diagnosis fee if the 8-80 warranty didn't apply. After an hour, I was told that the TSB did not apply to my transmission because its build date was not in the affected series. They came up with one additional DTC: 1790. The technician thought that doing the same work as the in TSB would correct the problems. Since their fees for a "transmission service" (replacing filters and fluid) start at $200, I decided to do the work myself. I had forgotten that the warranty has a $100 deductible, so even if it had applied, it would have cost that much. The FSM lists a number of diagnostic tests for these DTCs. Apparently the tech never bothered to do any of them. Filters are about $45 delivered from Moparpartsamerica. The service manager said that he would clear the codes for no charge after I replaced the filters. |

Try Nappa for the tranny filters I have used theirs twice with no problem. The part numbers are 1-8593 atp filter at $ 10.37 and 1-8594 Atp filter at $13.97 total with my local tax $25.90. The filters are made in the US and they look exactly the same. I think it even came with the gasket for the transmission pan. I also used some brake parts cleaner on the pan to get it really clean and also on the magnet that is on the bottom of the pan. Good luck hope this helps. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I shouldn't have been so quick to order from Moparpartsamerica. |

The CEL doesn't light, but the trouble codes are still set. I replaced the filters, but my Harbor Freight Launch Creader didn't clear the codes. Back to the dealer to see if the codes clear. Even though I had a large drip pan and used a mortar mix pan to catch the fluid, I had fluid all over the floor. The filter seal takes some yanking to get out. What a mess. A lift would have made things a lot easier. It took 7 quarts of ATF. |

The free code clearing offer on Thursday from the dealer somehow evolved into an offer of doing it for 1/2 hour of labor today. "Gotta charge ya something". The explanation was that it would have been free if they had done the transmission service. Such a deal. The FSM says that the code will clear after 40 starts if the problem is rectified. So I left without forking over another $50. |

Man I wish I had caught this thread earlier, x2 on the NAPA filters. Chances are they're from the same supplier as the OEM filters, and way cheaper. I put mine in 18,000 miles ago with no issues. Trust me, having a lift makes the job easier on the back, but it is still just as messy if not more so. I wonder if the codes stay so long because they are triggered by the TCM rather than from a sensor feeding info directly to the ECU? I'm curious as to why the codes would take so long to clear on their own, and why you can't clear them as you would any other DTC. Maybe see if someone in your area has VAG-COM, they can for sure clear the codes. |
