The Jeep was hit by a Kia at a low speed (10mph). The Jeep did not fare well, in fact, I'd say I'm beyond 100% disappointed in the structural integrity of the vehicle.

Frame bent in 1/2 inch at pass. door, crumpled floor, no airbag deployment on either vehicle.

I have a ton (like 7) of STP oil filters and two unused fuel filters that I need to find homes for.

I'm aiming to buy the vehicle back from insurance and part it out; will keep the forum posted on that.

In the mean time I acquired a far more dependable, albeit not 4x4 nor nearly as good for cargo hauling, 98 VW New Beetle TDI. So now we're just a VW diesel household. Sad, really, I had higher hopes for the CRD. Perhaps the Grand Cherokee in the future.

Here are some photos of the Jeep and its damage, and the replacement vehicle. I'll miss this group, you guys were a good bunch.

Sorry to hear you lost the lib'. Hopefully you'll enjoy your new ride, too!

Makes me want to go install rock rails with a step bar... like today.

Bummer, good luck with the TDI. I'm sure you are familiar with www.tdiclub.com, its where I came from when I sold my last TDI.

Yeah I'm really sad. It's going to snow this weekend and we have no donut capable vehicle now.... so I'm a little bitter.

I got the Beetle from a TDIClub member in Atlanta. I've been on there since before I bought the Jetta.

I'm still disappointed that it only took a small whack to total it out like that. Yeah the driver was OK, but, we're still out a Jeep.

So what? less than 11,000 are now available still? Guess that's a good thing to point out to insurance who has moved up to 13,500 for their payout offer.... not settling for less than 15500.

"excellent" private party blue book on mine here in LV KS is 15700, so 15.5 doesn;t sound far off, "retail" is like 19000 still, so if you can't what you want make them replace it, then they should see the light.

I don't know, that looks like an easy fix to me. Two doors, a section of floor and rocker and some odds and ends. Unless this is the good side. :mrgreen:

Yeah that does look fixable, and the monocoque frame rail is set well back from the sill. The B pillar will need some work, but the rest would be fairly easy.

Looks like the CRD did pretty well to me. :2cents: I've seen numerous roll-over accidents involving Jeeps in which the occupants literally got out and walked away. From experience I can tell you there is one thing Jeep does NOT skimp on..and that's structural integrity. Why do you think the Liberty CRD weighs 4,300 lbs? It's because the unibody and structure is built thick and hardcore.

In any case, sorry to hear about your loss. At least you'll still be burnin' oil... :JEEPIN:

He said that was a 10 mph hit. Seems moderately brutal to me for a little tap.

I thought the Liberty was mostly just supposed to be great at front and rear collisions, not side.

A 3,000 lb. hunk of steel on wheels hits you at 10 MPH and that's just "a little tap"? :shock: I guarantee that shot rocked the Jeep pretty good. And I guarantee any other SUV would be in much worse shape than the Jeep in that pic.

x2. Seems a shame to scrap it; it looks repairable.

I hope you aren't disappointed with the Beetle, mine is just like yours and I really like it.

No airbag deployment proves it though, you can't BS your way around those impact sensors. 15mph straight-line impact, and the steel ball will pop off it's magnet and BOOM.

So that Kia was definitely going less than 15... I'm with the group here - Buy it back and have it fixed. I fixed FAR worse on my 93 Taurus when my sister parked it in the back of a Lincoln Town Car and caused a 3 car chain reaction. Blew the airbag on the Taurus, ripped the entire front end off and put a V shape into the radiator.

But it still drove and moved under it's own power, and there wasn't anything structural hurt. I'd be SHOCKED if a few good pings with a sledge in the right spot didn't clear up the floor on your CRD.

Heck, for the right price, that would be a GREAT second CRD for someone to use off-roading.

If you do do a buyback please keep me in mind for the whole vehicle. Either myself or a friend would probably be interested.

My CRD looked much worse than yours when I got it. Would be a shame just to part it out.

I agree with the general consensus, if you can drive it away, why would you scrap it? I kind of doubt the vehicle is totalled with that little bit of damage any ways? So, was it totalled?

Insurance companies are so lawyer-happy these days that they believe everyone is as crooked as they are... So they prefer to total out a vehicle in almost every case and walk away, leaving someone else holding the bag on that vehicle.

The logic is this: What happens to this no-longer-pristine-structured vehicle if there is another accident? The frame may be compromised in undetectable ways (Oh BS!) and that pre-damaged area could buckle, causing further damage or injury costs to the insurance company. So statistically, it is cheaper to screw the customer on the value of their vehicle right then, get 90% of that money back by auctioning the vehicle to someone else... And the insurance company gets to know EXACTLY what the incident cost will be right then, rather than having to rely on a prediction of future claims AND the uncertainty of shoddy repair shops.

Didn't you know that automobiles were supposed to be disposable, like a styrofoam coffee cup anyway? Scratch the paint, get a new car!
