How fast should your 4x4 lock in. It seems that with mine that it is a few seconds after you actually pull it back into 4x4 (on the move) before it actually is in. I noticed tonight driving home in the snow that the rear started spinning a couple seconds after I put it in 4x4 and about slid my rear around in the road. I stopped and started again and it still wasn't in but it finally caught and was OK. Is this normal? Should all pressure be off of the drive trane (not in a pull) before you put it in? Most 4x4 shift on the fly that I've ever owned went in immediately when you pulled back the lever.

In my limited experience with using 4x4 on the highway, it has always engaged immediately... Not sure what could be causing it to lag, though :(

all CRD's came with the 242 transfer case
on the 242 - the shift lever pushes a spring
the spring pushes against a gear
if there is any variation front to rear - tire size/ wear/ pressure
4wd will delay - or not engage - and if it does engage it may not disengage

the lever will be in the correct position - you can only tell by the way it drives.

stopping and backing up will normally relieve enough stress to allow things to shift.

Also I have found that you have to let off the gas to make sure the rear tires aren't spinning otherwise it will get upset

I don't shift at full speed, just slow down to ~5mph like my owner's manual states. Pop into neutral, shift the t-case, pop into drive, idle off the brake (slow roll) for about 10' or so, then off I go with no worries.

I think the OP is referring to shifting in 4-hi (part time/full time). This can be done at up to 55mph.

I only issue I have had with mine is when I got stuck in my iced and snowed over driveway. when I parked it the night before this I was in 2wd and couldn't get full time to ingage while trying to back out. I had some room to pull forward a few feet then that let it go in to 4full-time and I was out of there.

as you can see by the pic in my avatar I don't hardy shovel the driveway.

I am proof that tires make a huge difference. I posted earlier that I had older tires on the front with new tires in the rear. My shift on the fly was slow for about a year (with two trips to dealership to ask what the deal was) I got new tires and everything cleared up.

I'm chalking this one up to driver error. I went out today in the snow to play a little and as long as I engage the transfer case before I'm spinning and not in a bind or pull, everything is perfect. It only seems to be slow engaging when there is already pressure on the rear diff.
